Version two of this tune. This is with the same banjo, only the banjo has been revamped to use extra heavy nylon strings tuned an octave down for double D. (no capo used)

This is a tune I made up for my second grand daughter Lily. I call it Bouncing Lily. I usually play it in double C but sometimes double D. I've made up tunes for each grand child that hopefully reflect their personalities, and Lily is an active girl! This is on an all Oregon Myrtle banjo I am just finishing up and put together to test before the final touches. Its a 25" scale, 12" x 1/2" x 3" myrtle block rim with no tone ring. The neck is extra wide with a lot of carbon fiber in it. I also loaded a few photos of the banjo in process.

A tune I made up for my third granddaughter, who has brown eyes. Named while watching her learn to crawl and bouncing off one piece of furniture after another. Played on Will Fielding's last banjo order, #14163

A quick recording of Charlie's Neat by my son (Russ Carson) on the 13" Prust tackhead banjo. He learned it from Reed Martin.

Wild Thursday night jam at the Krack Fiddle Shop tent during a torrential rain storm most of the time we were at it. Jake Krack - fiddle, Todd Clewell - guitar, Bob Buckingham - high (normal tuned) banjo, me (Glenn Carson) octave low banjo, Mike Bing - mandolin, Amy Buckingham - bass. Don't know the other guitar players name that came with Mike, and later several other folks joined, including Jane Rothfield (fiddle) and Dave Kiputh (banjo). This was a great jam, and one I won't forget. If you listen hard, you can pick out the two banjos, some rain on the roof, and on this one Jake's dog is barking and folks shouting and others dancing.

Drafted my son Russ to play clawhammer on a few tunes late Saturday night while his friend and Redline bandmate Reed Jones was visiting this weekend. Although Reed plays bass in the band, he is a great guitar player. Neither he or Russ had played this D tune before this, I played a brief snatch of it and they had it as you can hear. What great drive and rhythm those guys have, super fun to play with. My wife jumped in on bass and I'm on fiddle.

A second take on old favorite Soldiers Joy that is heavy on the joy and light on the finesse. The first is on my son's BHO music page with fiddle & banjo: http://www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/music.asp?id=15587 Can't believe we never tried it before, but the cut from the Circle album with John McEuen and Earl Scruggs was one of those banjo cuts that got my head spinning. Loved it. Anyway, here's our crazy father/son take on it. Dad is playing CH and son is BG style. Check his page out for more of same.

A quick run through to test a new banjo I built for my son Russ. This time in G modal. The banjo is a cherry slothead which started life as a Rickard neck blank, 25 1/2" scale, 1/4" brass tone ring on pins, John Balch skin head, etc.

A really quick recording of Squirrel Hunters just to see how the unfinished Oregon Myrtle banjo might sound in modal tuning. Its all out of myrtlewood, with no tone ring, a 25" scale, twin heavy carbon rods, a small peghead, extra wide fingerboard. The rim is 12" x 1/2" x 3".

I recently changed my main 12" pot home built player banjo to Nylguts tuned an octave down. Great fun for A and D fiddle tunes in a jam. I'm still searching for the perfect strings for the 3 rd and 4th (I've got classical guitar strings on them now), and this is a quick sound sample. Listening to it, I see that I've zoned out to banjoland again and added extra measures to the third part at one point, oh well. I'd appreciate any tips from other who have tuned down like this for their favorite strings. Thanks.
