Trying out a "Presto" tailpiece on my B&P Short Scale. I was just messing around but would appreciate constructive comments that could improve my playing. I hope this recording is not to tinny sounding. I am tuned up to "DD" so the air is a little thin up there. A touch out of tune on the "A", sorry. (6-1-2012: I ended up putting the No Knot back on and just stuffed it a little more . . . I'll be back with another version.)

Wrote this little ditty while on vacation last month at Canadohta Lake in PA about 30 minutes South of Erie. It's in A-Modal (with lots of drop-thumb) on the Enoch Fretless. (New version 7-25) Thoughts? ©2012

I've been working on a new banjo song entitled "Flying with Ray", it's still a little rough (recorded on my Van Horn using the trusty iPhone). My mechanic, Ray has a small 4-seater and he took my wife, youngest daughter, and I on a spur of the moment flight to go visit my oldest daughter in PA whose husband's sister died the day before in a traffic accident. We spent 30 minutes or so on the runway of this tiny airfield talking and consoling family who were waiting there for us in lawn chairs. It was a cool thing for him to do -- thanks again Ray. ©2013

I had been playing today for a few hours and was feeling pretty loose. Work was slow and I had some time. I had this melody I have been toying around with for awhile now and I decided to record it so I wouldn't lose it. At Midwest Banjo Camp this summer I took a class with Cathy Fink who told us to record everything because you WILL forget it! I just flipped on my iPhone and this is what I got! ©2012

My daughters friend John sent over an apple pie the other day and requested I write a song about it. So I accepted the challenge and sent him this! ©2016 (Bill Van Horn 12" Dobson, Chris Sands mediums, John Balch goatskin, spillway dam bridge.)

This is just a jam during my lesson this Wednesday, May 9th between me and my banjo teacher. I decided to record the lesson with an iPhone APP called 'FourTrack' and captured this spontaneous little Jam. I'm surprised my chair didn't creak at all during the recording. I broke out my new Enoch Tradesman Fretless (Walnut) with a newly installed Prucha Presto tailpiece and started playing, Mark played along on his Gibson. I appreciate these opportunities to just play and experiment during the lesson as it gets me used to playing with another instrument and taking chances. Hopefully I'll be ready to start Jamming this Summer. Just got this banjo in February 2012 from Bob Smakula and am starting to get acclimated. So here it is with no editing, clinkers (mine) and all!

After installing a John Balch 4-star Goat hide on my Van Horn 12" I decided to test it with this song idea for my recently deceased childhood friend Greg Kelly. Another person dead to young because of cancer. Recorded on my iPhone straight through flubs and all - chair squeaks are free. ©2013.

This song is for my friend Steve who just lost his wife unexpectedly after 30 years of marriage. She was his best friend. Funeral is tomorrow. (G modal, 12" goatskin with Reds on the Van Horn) ©2014

I have not put anything up since my very first recording so I thought I would post one of the songs I've been writing. Being affected by the plight of those whose lives have been changed forever because of all the flooding and all this rain, I started noodling with a song about what they might be feeling. This is a couple of months old. I play it with a little more confidence and dynamics now, a tad faster, and I have a nice bridge and more lyrics. Using GarageBand is always such a hassle for me that I just shy away from recording. Wish I had an Engineer on call - I hate the mechanics of recording by myself. ©2011

I started this one at Midwest Banjo Camp this summer. I was having instructional overload so I cut a class and sat on a bench out in the square. Worked out a few more parts when I got back. Recorded this in the backyard and towards the end you'll hear a roar, that's a Harley going down my street. It sounds kinda cool so I thought I would just upload this version. B&P short scale tuned up to DblD. ©2012

Have not put anything up in ages. Just jamming today on Shady Grove. It's kinda long at almost 12 minutes. Messing around with some ideas. Moving around on the head a little for tonal shading. Thought I would just turn on the mic and go for it. There's a few clinkers in there but I am trying to build up endurance by playing the same song for at least five minutes or more at one sitting. Capo is on the second fret.

Another work in progress. I'll ad another version with the lyrics when I get them finished. Played on my B&P. It seems a little rushed in a few spots but I'll iron out the pace as the song matures. Wanna try this with two fiddles, bass and guitar. Thanks for listening. ©2012 This morphed into "Flying With Ray."

My first recording on my Fawley parts open backed banjo. This was a few weeks ago and I'm better at it now and have (5) other songs in progress but this is my first banjo tune in GarageBand. It's just a snippet of the song. (I tried to follow the MP3 settings requested by the Hangout but not all the variables were available. Let me know if mp3 is bad quality so I can learn how to improve it - Thanks)
