My personal interpretation of Five Miles from Town. Mostly I am borrowing from Clyde Davenport and Rayna Gellert.

I first heard this tune from a local fiddler and started researching it. I found an original, and slightly different version on the Berea site from fiddler Sam Dyer (field recorded by Brad Leftwich). This version is my banjo adaptation. I play both the local fiddler's version and Sam Dyer's. Listen for the differences.

I always wonder who these folks are. Jack Wilson, for example. Was he an outlaw? A lover? A vagabond?

Fiddle, banjo and guitar all recorded on separate tracks. The fiddle is in crossed A. From John Salyer. This tune is, for me, one of the sweetest.

This came from fiddler James Leva. I think it is a new old tune.

I believe that this came from Bertram Levy's 'That Old Gut Feeling.' However, Bertram is a far more accomplished player than I, and I never really learned this tune. Just playing it from memory. I classified it as old time, but I believe that it really a French Canadian tune.

This version comes from Ernie Carpenter, who learned it from his grandfather, "Squirrely Bill." Note the crooked B part.

Reposting this tune. A hybrid version of a fiddler's take (she played it in G) and the classic banjo version.

This is from DIrk Powell's grandfather. Originally, there was only one verse (I sing this verse first and last). I added three versus and recorded this several years ago during an era of madness. This is a reposting of this tune.

Don't know exactly where this tune came from. I just started playing it on the fiddle one day. I think I must have heard a recording of a version of Debuque somewhere at some time, and then a couple of year's later, out it came It doesn't sound exactly like Debuque, but my firiends like to play it, so they call it Thielk's Debuque. We will be playing it tonight at the square dance as a medley with Camp Meeting on the Fourth of July. Camp Meeting is played first.
