This is in Gm tuning. Written by Bill Monroe. It was the first tune I learned totally by ear. I had recorded it on a small cassette recorder as Bill Foster played it in the banjo competition, either at the Fiddler's Convention in Florence, or in Athens, prior to 1974. For some reason, in order to learn it, I made a wooden capo layered up from a kite frame, that skipped the 4th string, and rubber banded it on at the 5th fret. Later on, I found where those notes were on the fingerboard without needing the 1st - 3rd strings capoed. Listening to it, you can visualize the early settlers coming across the mountains, on foot, on horse back, in wagons, carrying everything they owned, and risking their lives heading into a new frontier. Glenn Bagwell (if you look at the Gristmill Grinder photos from my Auburn days) would sing all the verses to this. He could even flatpick the intro to this, which was always fun to hear. The bass player and I would echo the opposites to his verses, usually making him forget the words... it was great fun and the audience loved it! This is a hard song to play right. The number of syllables in the verses make this very difficult to sing if the pace gets out of hand! Just listen to the Carnegie Hall material. Like Hot Corn... this is a song full of nonsense verses. Nonetheless, I like playing it... especially to the grandkids! I never developed an up the neck break to this or Hot Corn until Kyle set-up my Alvarez. The hollow, reflexive pop just begs me to play in the higher registers. The banjo is tuned to standard open G tuning, but is played out of F, like I learned it in church. I really like the slow stuff at times.
