Eldia plays flat key in A (AEAE); Oscar plays banjo using only his middle finger to fret. Eldia was friends with Lowe Stokes, but both his mom, dad, brother, and sister played fiddle before him

Calvin played with a thumb pick and a finger pick - he had a real bluesy sound - lots of flatted 3rds

Oscar hadn't played much since the 1930s when I got him playing with Eldia again. Their parents, Frank and Molly, both played fiddle. The family band in the 20s and 30s was Jim on fiddle, Oscar on banjo, and Eldia on guitar. Sister Elzia was the best fiddler - Roy Acuff tried to get her to join his band, but she wouldn't. I recorded her children as the Bice Family on the Pine Breeze recordings

Blaine plays viola (that's right!) and Florrie plays the clawhammer banjo. They learned this tune in early 1900s from Tom Douglas, the father of famed old time fiddler, Bob Douglas

I have no idea what the real title of this song is. Clay was 88 when I recorded him. This is the real deal - he played juke joints and road houses in the 30s and 40s

Trying not to offend with the title. Blaine played a lot of tunes that were in the black string band repetoire. Eldia and Bob Douglas both started out as guitarist in their family string bands (being the youngest) and both learned from Black railroad workers. Florrie usually played clawhammer, but she does finger picking on this tune
