Over the years I’ve learned a lot of songs using tab, but for the most part I’ve decided to try to break my addiction to it. It has been great for learning and some of it is very good indeed. But I’ve often found it disappointing: either the arrangement is too basic or it is something different from what I’m after. I’ve been working on the process of figuring out songs from repeated listening and using slow-down software. This approach is more time consuming but is infinitely more satisfying since it forces me to really listen to the music and pick up on many nuances that a lot of tab doesn’t really capture. The whole process I find to be helpful in “tuning the ear” to hear the music better. And I’m much happier with the end result once I’ve finally learned the song.
Please don’t take this the wrong way. I’ve learned a great deal from tab and greatly appreciate those who take the time to write it out for the rest of us. But I get the impression that many of us are overly dependent on it and would do well to try on a regular basis to work songs out for ourselves.

First picked up a banjo in the early 2000's and have been working away at it ever since. Recently I've really gotten into old time music and have been playing more clawhammer than anything else. I jam whenever I have the opportunity and play fairly regularly with a group of friends.. I do enjoy getting together with pickers of all levels and would be happy to get together with other members of the Hangout in the Guelph/K-W area.
