Born in a sleepy town in 1950. Discovered bluegrass and OT music in early 1960's listening to Newport Folk Festival albums. Discovered New Lost City Ramblers, Bill Monroe, the Dillards, Jimmy Martin and JD, Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Eric Weissberg and Marshall Brickman rapidly after that. Tried guitar for 2 minutes. Bought first old 5 string immediately. Didn't even know how to tune it until met two great local pickers. Began watching and listening to them closely. They taught me all I needed to get going. Got my first proper banjo. Learned a lot by slowing 33rpm LP's down to 16rpm. Late 1960's and early 1970's full to the back teeth playing bluegrass. Learned a whole lot by jamming and playing in bands. Best way to learn. Made a lot of friends. Along the way, picked up old time fiddle playing too. Had several bands over the years. Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys. Black Rock Turnpike. Tenbrooks Bluegrass Band. Clover Hill. Southland Band. Several banjos over the years, too. Yes, I regret letting a couple of them go.... Currently play in 2 bands. Bluegrass Junction http://www.saccm.com/artists/bluebrassjunction/ and Phil Parker and the Bridgland Brothers http://www.saccm.com/artists/philparkerandbridglandbrothers/index.html Still jamming and making friends. That's bluegrass for you.
