Hey there!  Well, I just picked up a very old timey banjo that I found on one-of-a-kind craigslist out here in the bay area.  I heard it was a Charles Waldman whom I found very little about on the net, other  than that the only retailer is Gryphon Strings in Palo Alto.   So I called old Mr. Waldman up who happens to be an impressionistic brush painter of the Southern Sierra's and Doctor of sorts who likes the clawhammer style. 

Mr. Waldman makes a beautiful simple tool to really get back to the punchy and plucky Appalachain-style.  It's much different than a Bart Reiter or the Vega style, I've found out, with a much lower less imposing tone.  A pun on the "tubaphone" style, Waldman calls his unique 12" open-back head a "widowphone."  Whatever, it's just nice to have something made close to home and a bit stylish for its rarity.  Hope to make it my own.  1 comment
