Banjo Championships 2007

Saturday, June 30, 2007

What luck, a long, early morning drive up to Red Bluff was the preamble for Donley Smith and I as we headed up to the California State Old Time and Bluegrass Championships. The length of the trip apparently deterred many players, despite the large prize money, as not too many of the large number of great banjo frailers in California showed up. Nevertheless, we did, and my luck was in as I won first prize. Oddly enough, the banjo contest, both bluegrass and old time styles, were part of "Pappy Wishbone's Redneck Championships." Even though we were tempted to participate in the "Mud Pit Belly Flop" contest, and the "Toilet Seat Horseshoe" contest, after the banjo playing portion of the event, we ate BBQ with the judges, drank some beer and headed for home. California State Old Time Banjo Champ, 2007, that's me. I played, Sally in the Garden, Staten Island Hornpipe, Billy Martin and Colored Aristocracy. Some of my favorites. No matter what the outcome, the trip was a lot of fun with Donley, a great frailer as well. 3 comments
