I learned to play from the Pete Seeger banjo book (1st ed.), by watching Eric Weissberg and Bob Yellin of the Greenbriar Boys in Washington Square Park in New York City, and by slowing down records. In 1960 and 1961, I played in the Stony Island Boys with the late Mike Michaels (mandolin) and Jonathan Aaron (guitar) at the University of Chicago: we played at the University of Michigan Folk Festival, at the Woodstock (NY) Playhouse, at Reuel Denney's International Seminar at Harvard, and recorded at the UC radio station (recently remastered to CD). Between 1961 and 1965, guitarist Mark Faurer and I gigged around NYC and were recorded by producer Norman Dayron: a CD of our work, "Match Play," was produced in 2003. Between 1973 and 1980, I played in the Bluegrass Express with Bob Brooks (mandolin, dobro), Paul Suttle (banjo, guitar) and Sandi Suttle (bass) in Wooster and around the Wayne County area in Ohio. In 2004, fiddler Charlene Adzima and I recorded the CD "Woograss," featuring a selection of banjo and fiddle duets. For the past several years I have also played gigs in Southwest Florida and recorded with the Sawgrass Drifters (Roland and Mickie Scholl; CD: "Down the Road," 2005) and with Richard and Elaine Bott (CD: "Close to Home," 2006) in Southwest Florida. In recent years I have also played gigs in northeastern Ohio with old time fiddle player Marcus Ladrach, with singer Michelle Massaro, and with the Backroom Boys Bluegrass Band. In the summer of 2011, I gave a lecture/performance of American country music for graduate students and faculty at Southeastern University 東南大學 in Nanjing 南京, China.
