I began playing tenor banjo in my art school days. I became a pro musician in 1965 playing on the UK folk circuit. I played guitar in an early UK bluegrass band Ian McCann and the Roan County Boys. I joined the Malcolm Price Trio in 1965 as a mandolin player and in 1968 joined the Orange Blossom Sound as lead vocalist and guitar player. In 1974 I was invited to play fiddle in another Bluegrass band, Mountain Line. I later reverted to guitar and recorded three albums with the band before it split in 1976. I gave up playing professionally in 1975. In 1975 I became a founder member of Barnstorm a bluegrass and square dance band which is still gigging. I play mainly guitar but I still dabble with the mandolin and I play clawhammer banjo for recreation.
