After spending my youth as a jock in Indiana, I had a roommate in college who played Kottke style fingerstyle guitar. I took that up and got pretty fast, so the first time I picked up a friend's banjo, I could play TITM rolls along with Earl on FMB. Since I was used to reading six strings of guitar tab, banjo tab with lots of 0's on the 5th string was a piece of cake. I used Peter Wernick's book, BNL, and Bill Knopf's "Hot Licks For Banjo". His concept of G, C and D noise got me on the road to improv. After 6 months of a lot of banjo (halfway through law school), I quit school and played 12 hours a day for three years. Luckily, I finished law school and practice privately. I have played in bands in the Chicago area since 1981 and presently play once or twice a month in a quintet with my 14 yr old son on fiddle. He has won about a dozen contests and is trying to learn to play breaks on vocals. I also play fiddle and spend most non-banjo music time trying to learn gypsy jazz rhythm guitar
