I've played guitar since 1968 and bass since 1970. I was fortunate to have been helped to learn bass 1st by Ronnie Padavona (Dio) about 1971. He was vocalist/bassist for western NY state rock band favorite "The Elves". My 2nd help on bass came along in 1972 because of my drummers ex-band mates and that was bassist Billy Sheehan of the Buffalo, NY rock band Talas. My band opened for West Bruce and Laing that same year at Penn State University. By this time I was playing with my band every night of the week somewhere, sometimes twice in one day. We opened for Joe Walsh and Barnstorm at the Century Theater in Buffalo, NY about the time his song "Rocky Mountain Way" 1st came out and was getting so much radio airplay. Lot's of club gigs, some big concerts opening for bands like Deep Purple, Buddy Miles, Fleetwood Mac, Foghat, Three Dog Night, Steppenwolf, etc, Ok, too much to list here. It just kept going this way up until 1980 and I was a very lucky fella but what about banjo? My uncle Babe lived in Scandia, PA in the 70's and had 2 Bluegrass bands in which he picked banjo 3 finger style. He played really well and could light a banjo up with his fast picking! He showed me quite a few things on it and I picked it up now and then but never really got serious about it until recent times. I play music a lot every day now and record music in my studio called Good Earth Recordings. I put in more time on clawhammer banjo these days than I do guitar and bass but for some reason playing the banjo seems to improve my ideas and playing on the others. I'm not sure why but not gonna argue with the results I reckon. Clawhammer with my right (picking) hand seemed impossible at first for me but one day it just started happening. And now? I play banjo a lot every day because I love it and also in an attempt to teach my picking hand to catch up to my fretting hand that played lead guitar and bass 48 years. I think playing bass all those years touring with the band helped a great deal with the picking hand muscle memory thing on clawhammer banjo. I play a little 3 and 2 finger old time banjo along with some of Pete Seeger's picking styles every day too. There's much more in my music career that would take too long to list here like my touring in the 80's on lead guitar. I like playing bluesy slide guitar because of Joe Walsh and now sometimes I play slide banjo. Great campfire stories for the grand kids ;^)
