I was a 'folkie' playing blues guitar and 'Seeger style' banjo in coffee houses in the early 60's. Found an old 2nd hand Starday vinyl album with Earl's Foggy Mountain Breakdown and the Stanley Bros "Rank Strangers'. Just had to hear more! Then heard another LP with Clarence Ashley's old time modal version of 'the Cuckoo Bird' and saw the New Lost City Ramblers when they came here in 1965. Fell in love with Old Timey. Learnt clawhammer and then Scruggs style. Formed the "Skillet Lickers Bluegrass Band" and did over 100 weekly appearances on the national Reg Lindsay's Country Music TV show (1967-1970). Have done session work on 5 albums and recorded 4 with our bands. Retired Electronic Engineering lecturer who now teaches banjo, mandolin, fiddle and guitar. Founded and ran the monthly South Australian Bluegrass and Old Timey jam (2005-2007). Toured the USA in 2004 (18 states),with local Aussie banjo builder, Alan Funk. Picked at the Merlefest NC, at Townsend in the Smokies and Old timey in West Virginia with the great fiddler and student of Clark Kessinger, Bobby Taylor. Am now running the twice monthly Adelaide Old Time Jam with around 20-30 pickers and the Adelaide Olde Time String Band.. Still learnin lotsa tunes (mainly Old Time fiddle tunes) and trying to keep to keep my sense of humour as I get older!. To help that I've recently decided to have a go at Irish Tenor banjo. Lotsa fun as there's lots of sessions here in Sth Australia.
