So many wound 3rd string sets to choose from:
Gold Tone GT ML-1: 018w, 022w, 030w, .040w, 018w strings.
Ben Proctor: 014, 016, 024w, 030w, 014
R. G. Hocutt: .0125, 013, 018wn, .026wb, 0125
Deering Julia Belle / John Hartford: 012, 014, 020w, 024w, 012
Clifford Essex Heavy: 011, 014, 020w, 026w, 011
Clifford Essex Clawhammer: 010, 013, 016w, 024w, 011
Clifford Essex Medium: 010, 013, 018w, 024w, 010
Kam Robertson : 011, 013, 017w, 023w, 010
notes: similar to the CE-clawhammer/med. This set was initially created to correct the weak volume/voice of a modern Dobson type banjo with ~1/2"x11" rim, heavy brass medium length tailpiece, compensated bridge, amber head (91/92) and 25.5" scale; this set proves out well, giving a fuller/richer tone to other low mass tone ring types (<2lbs). Phosphor bronze strings and an amber head are a good fit for a warm Dobson voice, use nickel and/or a frosted head for a more assertive tone. The 1st string 011p matches the wound 3rd instead of clashing like a 010p does (I think it may be a misprint on the CE set). Using 010p or 011p sounds good in the 5th position. 024w is a bit much in the 4th position; 022w/023w are a better tonal fit. Sourcing 016w is about impossible; 017w/018w are more available. cbgitty.com daddario.com
Hunter Robertson: 009, 012, 016w, 020w, 009 (Clifford Essex Light)

note: Learning the words and singing along (out loud or in my head) helps me make the tune and timing sound 'right'. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| note: Check out the Steve Davis head tension method with a 10" ruler and coins if a DrumDial isn't handy. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| "A man must love a thing very much if he not only practices it without any hope of fame or money, but even practices it without any hope of doing it well." G. K. Chesterton ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| - Take a length of seatbelt webbing for the shoulder (long enough to reach from hook over should to hook) - Stitch a longer length of soft 3/4" - 1" webbing to the seatbelt webbing (long enough to go round the banjo over the shoulder and tie together) note: bar tack at the ends of the wider strap and stitch between - Gently melt the ends of the webbing to prevent fraying. Do not be vigorous about melting the ends; the hard melted plastic is scratchy and inconvenient. - Add a pad to suit. I have yet to need or want one. - run the narrow webbing thru the hooks in a cradle fashion - tie the ends of the narrow webbing together with a square knot Simple yet elegant. This is better than perfect; it's adequate. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Musical instruments bring discord and peace; the trick is in the harmony.
