So, having decided to practice the bluegrass techniques a little less. and play a little more Clawhammer with my ever-so valuable time, I decided to invest in some new strings to go with it.
Having read plenty of reviews and hunted the web for info, I plumped for some Aquila 'Nylgut' strings for my Open-Back.
I should state 2 things really.
Firstly - 2 hours to re-string a Banjo is a long time (mostly because tying bow-lines is very fiddly!)
Second - What a fantastic noise is now coming from my amateurishly played banjer!
Having just found banjomeetsworld.com and read the info on there, I could be investing in a new bridge shortly too!
I just tought I'd share that, as I know there's been a lot of comment about what a pain these strings are. Yup, they're a pain to get tied on to your banjer, but what a great noise! Well worth a go, I reckon.
Oh, and a big thanks to Bridport Music who were really excellent (and actually got me the strings when I asked for them and not a fortnight later!)

I'm an eco-terrorist (scientist, if you prefer) specialising in Chemistry. I 'don't do' Biology - all of that poking around inside of road-kill was never for me, and Physics was always '..on a frictionless plane..' and '..in a perfect vacuum..' which we all know is just made-up speak for '..our best guess is..' Started learning Banjo after I harrassed my wife in to getting me one for Christmas and have never looked back.
