I can see that America needs a central meeting place where we can all go to remind each other what is the "essence" of what we call Bluegrass. Tony Rice, having influenced diverse musical worlds delivers it musically. More than the moods and feelings evoked, the essence for me comes from what happens between the songs. For me it is rooted in our friendships. The World of Bluegrass is truly a world-wide social club that thrives on sharing acoustic music between friends. It doesn't matter if the sound of my banjo solo reminds you of VanHalen, the essence, I believe is that it is played in the context of honest and open friendships. The true beauty of this music is that when we share a common tune, we instantly enter into friendships that never die. My ability to travel the world, and host foreign friends is mainly dependent on that loosely defined characteristic of Bluegrass. If Americans want to continue their domination of events at the International yearly gathering, they will be missing opportunities to encourage the outward growth of this music and foster friendships that might have them playing in the far reaches of the globe. As long as IBMA is held in America, I say we should be good hosts, and welcome our guests with places of honor on our most important stages, and raise money to pay them so they can bring their whole ensembles, not just one or two representatives from each band. We will be expanding Bluegrass's global influence while gaining musical inspiration from their entertaining foreign flair. If you agree, Please become a member of Nechville's Banjo Revolution by simply buying a Nechville instrument and start playing it everywhere. Oh, most importantly, join IBMA and let your voice be heard. Tom Nechville
