Yup. You can use the Steve Davis straight edge method too. That gets you where you want to be as well.

92 is as tight as I want to go with my banjo. You can tighten the head tighter than 92 without bursting it, but the banjo starts losing tone after that point IMO. I actually like mine best between 91 and 92.

How did 92 sound compared to 87?

Which banjo are you talking about. If it's the Ludwig head, would that read a little different from the Remo, tuned the same?? I know that the Davis method is slightly different for the two different heads.

i like it better on 87, and it is a ludwig head, i may turn it back down if the sound dont change, but the head is just a few weeks old so it may stretch a lil and start sounding better.

Generally tune my Stelling head to a G#/~91 on the Drum Dial; the general vicinity that Geoff seems to recommend most. We each have a certain sound that we favor and try to find. However, it's your banjo and the sound should satisfy you and not meet others' criteria. Part of the fun thing about banjos is how adjustable the tone is and tweak them to find what you like.

G# is a popular choice. Thanks.

I have a 2012 bellflower the very first thing I did when I got home from picking it up from the dealer I purcassed it from was to measure every thing so I had reference points to fall back on should I decide to change any thing I measured the head tension with a Tama tension watch drum dial and it was 86 -87 it could be that the Tama drum dial my register a little different to the drum dial brand I am happy with my head where it is set by Geoff . I doubt it would have slackened off from 92 to 86 in the flight from the USA to Aus .

Yeah Geoff even says in the setup section of the Stelling site that anywhere between G and B is probably best depending on taste. I am guessing that would be somewhat equivalent to 87-92 or thereabouts.

Ken--suspect 87 would be in the D-E range for the head note. 90+ gave me a G and 91 has mine at G#. Was set up by Geoff in his VA shop in DEC '11, and has stayed true since. The head was already stretched and I'd tightened it a couple times before.
banjogirl1980--wonder if there's a difference in the readings you get from your Tama and I get from my DrumDial? I know if I set my Stelling to 87 using my DrumDial, it would sound REALLY tubby, if not downright dull. Have you tried to use your tuner to try to see what pitch your banjo's head is at at 87? Just curious, like I said earlier, if it's how you like it to sound, then it's set just right for you.

its no where near tubby at 87 it has a good hard pop,if i wanted a tubby sound id go get a Gibson mastergoard i mean mastertone, lol!! id say the Tama at 87 is like the DD at 90 or 91, in the tama the part that touches the head looks like a ball point pen and i think that is the difference, im gona sale the Tama and get a DD brand.

When you do get the DD let me know what it measures compared to the Tama please. Like I said I have my reference point just curious to see the difference between the two dials Side by side. Thanks .

will do, i kinda wana see how much difference there is myself.

I agree with Ian, 87 on a DD would be very tubby!

Greetings banjogirl 1980 the difference between Drum Dial & Tama is DD measures in Inchs thousands of an inch and Tama measures in metric thousands of a millimeter . Check out mikedrums.com/drumdial.Html
