Bridges

From kmwaters on 4/10/2013 6:39:42 AM

Wide open area of opinion on bridges as we know.  I am not convinced that everyone will prefer a Stelling bridge on a Stelling banjo, and I am not sure that even Stelling himself would ever have that expectation.

I tried a Sosbee submerged wood bridge on my Staghorn but quickly went back to the Stelling bridge. Not sure what the differnce is, but the Stelling bridge was much warmer and richer. Fit my taste better.

Exactly. Proves the point that personal preference is what bridges are all about. I have a Steve Davis bridge on mine and love it. Not an issue of superior or inferior. Many good bridges that just aren't everyone's taste.

its all in what you and the banjo like best, me! i like the old Snuffy Smith bridges from back in tha good old days but its almost imposable to find a 5/8" SS bridge under 50 bucks.

I have a Steve Davis bridge also and it sounds great on my banjo. I go back and forth with it and the Stelling bridge and they both do a fine job.

When I received my Red Fox, it had a Purcell bridge on it. It was good in the sense that I could strip varnish off the wood wall panels in the room while playing, but it lacked that last touch of tone. So, I put on an old Stelling I had around and that was better. However, the one, lone Snuffy Smith I had hanging around for a long time turned the Stelling into a Foxy Lady. It really sounds superb now.

Do all the new Stellings come with the same bridge? My Staghorn has an submerged wood birch, I think.

There is NO right answer here. Personally I love playing around with different combinations of frame/top woods - and I am really liking the Kat Eyz bridges right now. For what it's worth, currently I am using the following:

1. On my Red Fox (#4,666) I have: Pegged Banjo Bridge, Model: Kat Eyz , Top: Blackwood , Frame: SubMaple , Width: Reg , Height: 11/16, Spacing: Crowe , Banjo: RH , Radius: None , Compensated: NO.

2. On my Whitestar (#2,555) I have: Pegged Banjo Bridge, Model: Kat Eyz , Top: Ebony , Frame: McCormick Spice, Width: Reg , Height: 11/16 , Spacing: Crowe , Banjo: RH , Radius: None , Compensated: NO.

Both are outstanding - but different. Have fun experimenting!
