Leave strings and bridge in place.

I agree. Leave them in place. I've done it both ways and see no advantage to removing strings/bridge.

I like the head on my Red Fox to be a little better than 91. I usually go to 92 and it will settle to 91 or so. You may have to tweak it a little one way or the other to get the desired tone.

BTW, I don't remove the strings and bridge either.

91 is the setting I use and I leave the banjo set up and tuned to pitch.

i will set it at 91 and see how i like it, thanks Geoff!

Once all the j-hooks are at least finger tight, I recommend that you start at the right side of the neck (banjo upside down) and tighten each j-hook till it offers some resistance, then go to the next one to the right. Once you've gone around the entire pot (stopping at the left side of the neck heel), check the tension with the drum dial. Generally, one click on the dial equals about one turn of the nut driver on each j-hook nut. Once you've done it, you'll figure out the drill.
