String buzzzzzzzzzz

From banjoman717 on 4/1/2013 6:31:31 PM

Hello everyone!  My new Stelling Crusader has developed some string buzz. Its gotten worse sence I changed the strings. Its only when I use a capo at the 2nd fret. Im afraid to adjust anything myself, can anyone recomend a dealer or someone reputable. I live in the Dayton Ohio area. Thanks for any help.

Did you go to lighter gauge strings? If so, less tension means you may need to loosen the truss rod to get more neck relief. Not hard to do. I think there's a guide on Stelling's web site. If not there are at least a gazillion tutorials on the web.

Hey thanks for the onfo. Actually I went from a light gage to a light medium gage. The buzz is on the 4th string and maybe a little on the 2nd. This banjo has a really low action, may have to bring it up a little.

Usually buzzes down the neck are truss rod and up the neck are action.

Sometimes a change in humidity can change the neck relief a little, so it could need the truss rod tweaked, but the first thing I would check would be head tension. Most if not all Stelling banjos are set up with a 11/16 bridge. If it has been changed to a lower bridge, you might have to go back to 11/16. ....Just a few things to check.

you may try tightening the head up a lil becouse if it was a new banjo with a new head, the head will stretch and couse the bridge to sit lower as the head stretches, and the reason i say try this is becouse it happend to me just 2 days ago and that was the cause of my buzz.i tightend the head and the buzz want away.

All comments have merit and are worth pursuing further. My first reaction is to check string height at the first fret, 12th, and 22nd and the overall bow in the neck. Low action is caused by too loose a head, too flat of a neck, or the wrong bridge size as mentioned above, assuming no one changed the rim rods. Follow the suggestions on the set-up sheet that should have come with the banjo.
All the best, Geoff

Thanks for al the info. Its a 2007 Stelling I just purchased from a friend. It all original with the stelling bridge. I'll check that head tension. And Geoff can you tell me where I can get a setup sheet that comes with new ones?
Thanks again
Mike

Mike,
I can mail you a Crusader set-up sheet. It's the same basic set-up except that the bridge position is 13 5/16" from the 12th fret and the russ rod is possibly a two way instead of the one way and it needs an Allen wrench. Do you have that?
Geoff

Yes I do have Allen wrenches. I checked the 7th fret with a capo on 1 & 22. It took a .022 feeler gage under the strings. Open the string height is .065 under the 12 th. and just a little more at 22.

.065 at the 12th is too low. Better is .090-.100". Your head is probably loose.
