I, too, bought my instrument used from Elderly, paying far less for it in excellent, almost as-new condition, than I would have paid for a new instrument, which I never could have afforded. Never have I regretted this purchase.
I just had an interesting experience with it. For practice and lessons, I started using a couple of other banjos, both of which are really nice instruments that use Bart Reiter necks. I've now transitioned back to the Stelling. I can't believe how wonderfully the thing handles and plays in comparison to the others. It's also got the tone and the volume that I'm looking for.
Plus, when I need something for it, it's pretty darned cool to call the Stelling shop, talk to either Geoff or his wife, and order what I need, be it strings, a bridge or what have you. I like that connection with the craftsman who builds these great instruments.
