mounted my own skin and soo happy I did

From little-other on 12/29/2012 4:42:06 PM

well I spent yesterday in the blistering heat mounting my first vellum, and soo happy I did, my banjo is transformed both in sound and look, I would  highly recommend anybody contemplating to give it a whirl, my apparently "low end "  but very pretty 1930s perlgold  open back is like i said TRANSFORMED it has a much sweeter and soulful tone, from a quite bright sound to a more old time I guess, as soon as I rapped that pot after it tightened I knew it was a whole different animal, I still have my steel strings. admittedly i may have to tighten and adjust the head each time I play, its settlin in ........ and tune, but fiddling with it is worth the better sound, made a flesh hoop from aluminum wire, would recommend two pairs of hands, many thanks to banjo nz for the skin!!!! and poo poo to you man at twang town who  laughed at me when I said I would mount my own.... BANJO DIY!

Well done Rachel. The first one is always the worst but I think you nailed it. I don't think you need to tighten the head each time you play it. Heads will tighten and losen due to changes in humidity, temperature etc but NZ climate is relatively stable compared to some countries. Just see how it performs. Wayne

An interesting bridge design here for Clawhammer banjo with no scoop. banjobridge.com/br-08.htm

And I can remember when the only bridges you could get were Grover. We have certainly come a long way.

Bart apparently makes great bridges. I personally have never tried any of his but I have tried many of the major brands. A year or so ago I recieved 14 bridges to try from a source in Oz. This particular company carryies banjo parts etc and sent me the bridges free of charge to try on my Gibson ESS and only pay for that which I wanted. I sent the rest back. Of the 14, only two worked for my banjo and I selected one which was a Snuffy Smith 3. The others, while they were well made and some were well known ones, just didn't work on my banjo for whatever reason. If you buy overseas then it is caveat emptor.

Many men have tried, .... tried and failed ?, no... they tried and died !, Hence "an interesting bridge design". Maybe the easiest way to assassinate a banjo is to use the wrong bridge ?.

Blunt phonograph needles covered in fluff come to mind for some strange reason ?, and mp3 !.
