Christmas humbug ! (and another moan)

From NZsteve on 12/17/2012 11:01:44 PM

I now have a surplus of RK-OT-25BR, open backs, (of course you all know this model), and a deficit of RK-35's thanks to a cock up from the factory, can hardly freight them back. Those grumpy old men and Vic Meldrew certainly know a thing or two, of course not arriving in time for Xmas  hardly helps. Humbug !. *****!!!!!!

No rush, probably have them for the next five years.

Maybe I could use them to build a zimmer frame?

What does the "BR" in the model number represent? And how much are they going for?

Hi Simon, you have picked up on something I have been wondering about the "R" in BR. RK yes "Rec King". OT old time, 25 - model 2 5 string, (dont think they make 4 string), B - banjo R ?. If this is for a resonator it does not have one its an open back !. The jos are $850. Going to put some decent pics on the website soon. Developing quite a leaning to RK, the 3/4" maple rim is a big factor & the overall build quality, and asthetics classy but not "over the top". Intend putting something on the board about preferred string height for open backs, for different playing styles.

Just as an example to the above and asthetics, the use of Nickel hardware as opposed to Chromium seems to highlight subtleties of design asthetics.

I wonder what else I can try selling? ;)

If you don't like my hat, it means you don't really need that word anyway ;)

Thanks for the clarification - I was hoping BR might stand for Brass Ring but I guess not.

Hi Simon, Looking at the Gold Tone WL-250 White Layde tone ring for next year, but it bumps the price up a lot. You can get open backs with the rolled brass tone ring but its a bit of an in betweener, at the bottom end you can get the Gold Tone cc-50 open back with rolled brass tone ring. The Gold tone MM-150 White Lady is lower cost but without castelated tension ring, plain maple, just doesn't look right for old time. The RK 25 OT and the WL-250 are different design philosophies, either end of the spectrum. RK with 3/4 " rim built like a brick toilet, a diddy tone ring would not do much, and a flat top more bluegrass. The Gold Tone a little over 1/2" and White layde tone ring. Some people find a thin rim uncomfortable and sticks in. The Bob Carlin models have a 12" pot with rolled brass tone ring. Its these different design philosophies for old time I find interesting. On top of that what bridge do you use, tipped or not. I cant see how modern tech designs equate to old time, although tone rings have been around for a very long time.
