According to the BBC website the US government has fined the Gibson Guitar company a total of $350,000 over It's import and use of “illegally” obtained timber from Madagascar in its instruments. The US Fish and Wildlife Service impounded ebony and rosewood imported from Madagascar and India. Gibson violated the Lacey Act, which requires the use “legally” obtained timber.
Deforestation is an issue that affects Madagascan wildlife such as Lemurs.
I recon that's about 87 banjos and an unknown amount of Lemurs !.
