Wayne has brought up up a very interesting and easily forgotten point about modern banjo strings when commenting on the "rolled steel rims" entry, banjo strings of course have not always been made of steel !. Banjo ukes use nylon & nylgut, cello banjos use nylon. Aquilla make Nylgut strings for banjos, modern banjo bridges are usually tipped, relatively heavy for nylon, & designed for steel strings. The whole design of a banjo changes to accommodate the use of steel strings. Old time banjos used vellum, very light two legged non tipped bridges, gut strings and a much lighter construction. As a thought If you play "oldtime", or Bluegrass should you try using Nylgut ?, Any thoughts ?.
