Rolled steel rim, "you can not be serious" ?.

From NZsteve on 6/3/2012 3:37:10 PM

Here's a test, which current major American manufacturer makes a rolled steel rim "bluegrass" banjo, Or is there more than one ?. Hint they also make a banjo without a truss rod, surprising result !.

I would say it is the Deering banjo company. The one without a truss rod is the 'Goodtime'. Also this model is not made with a separate fingerboard. I know this from personal experience because a student purchased one and brought back with them from the USA. The neck had a convex bow in it when set up. It took about 3 weeks with the neck being under string tension to bow back the other way.

Therefore whose site do you think this is from ?.

Hi Kirt,
Thanks for writing and you make a very good point. The caution on this would be in the case of the Goodtime banjo. We recommend only light gauge strings on that line to protect the integrity of the neck as regards bowing from too much strain by higher gauges.

Not sure what you mean by this Steve?

I agree with the light guage strings. In the case of old banjos I would never recommend anything other than lights. The reasob being that these instruments were never designed for steel strings, only gut. I have seen many Stewerts fitted with steel strings an a number of them have been 'butchered' over time to bring the action down because the necks have 'pulled up'. Modern banjos have the strength and hardware to resist neck bowing. Having said this a number of open back and BG banjos are played with medium strings. This is personal preference.

Hi Wayne, the above extract is from the Deering website advising what strings to use on a Goodtime banjo, light gauge strings would definitely be good idea on a banjo with no truss rod !.
