BANJO 's NZ, DEERING GOODTIME 2, GOLDTONE

From NZsteve on 11/19/2011 4:21:37 PM

Talking about Deering banjos, and bearing in mind i am not an impartial observer, http://goldtone.com/resources/comparison.pdf  here is a specification comparison. Given the Deering brand and reputation, does this surprise you ?. No truss rod ?

I have played quite a few Deering Goodtimes and have been reasonably impressed with thier playability and sound. However I did come across one Goodtime that was purchased in the US and then came out here with its owner. The neck had a convex bow and the strings were rattling badly against the frets when fretted towards the nut. I contacted Deering and they were going to provide a new neck at thier cost. I advised them to wait and see what happens after the banjo was setup a bit better. Well, over about a two week period the neck pulled up nicely and became straight. Needless to say that Deering were relieved. This was the only example of this I have ever seen in the Goodtimes.

Hi "banjonz", i would expect, or hope, that the Goodtime is most likely the only banjo in the range that has this "attribute", and i can understand the reasons why some of the other spec. is low, (not to say that goodtime 2 is not decent entry level banjo) You have to design an american manufactured banjo with cost factors in mind to match the US designed Chinese manufactured banjos or parts. Even the low end Chinese student level banjos have a truss rod, it makes you wonder what goes through the minds of your design team, or person ?. Perhaps its too many of the american Budweiser, as opposed to the orignal Czech. Now if the Chinese had aquired a Goodtime to copy ?
