Banjo Bits

From Sixthumbs on 9/29/2011 1:27:04 AM

Hi Guys

Just starting out, where's everyone getting strings, picks, heads, bridges etc from, are there any good local guys to go see or is everyone going offshore?

Thanks

Hey,
You can get banjo stuff in NZ especially strings and picks but I've found it works out cheaper if you're buying in bulk to get it directly from the states. elderly.com is a good place to get strings.. $13US for 5 sets which can be how much one set costs in a music store here.
Shipping can be expensive though so I recommend buying everything you want at the same time from the same place.
Good luck!

I agree with BB. I get my stuff in bulk from Elderly. I also carry bridges and heads for my own repairs and setups. Strings are available in NZ but the selection is not that great.

Yes Elderly is excellent. There is also a good shop in the UK called Eagle Music Shop (Google it). Very helpful and pretty reasonably priced to with shipping etc. They really know their stuff banjo wise.

Thanks Guys, from looking around locally I had more or less come to that conclusion, just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed something.Have placed an order for a couple of different picks and some strings based on what other folk on BHO are using( Got a RK-R80 that I'm using to scare birds and small children away while I learn ;-P) Not going to bother messing with anything else till the noise sounds more like music than mindless plucking lol

Can we get a little contentious here, or is there a large degree of acceptance. What is you favourite brand of strings and why ?. Or is it horses for courses.

I'll kick off, I'm using a set of GHS JD Crowe PF140 Light strings. Much easier on my learners fingertips than the original strings on my RK were I can practice for around an hour a night before my fingers get sore, got some mediums to try once I toughen up lol
