NZ Hangout New Members. Introduce yourseles

From NZsteve on 7/10/2011 1:19:11 AM

NZ Hangout new members, introduce yourselves, say a bit about yourselves, what music do you like favourite bands, what's  the best banjo you ever played ? What do you think about Bela Fleck ?. Live at the Quick DVD is a must, a great dvd. 5.1 surround or pcm stereo. Not listened to this in 5.1 yet, not many 5.1 are any good.  Roy Orbison black and white night in 5.1 is the way 5.1. should be used. Not known for his banjo playing !.

Hi all, I'm an American ex-pat living in Wellington. Have always loved the banjo but just picked it up after moving to your beautiful country. I'd love to find a teacher in Wellington city or just a few people to (attempt to) jam with. I love the old-style bluegrass (i.e. Scruggs et al) but am keen to learn anything that gets my fingers moving and foot tapping!

Hi, Steve. I play with a band called the Pipipickers (pipipickers.com). Been playing since I was 16 (so 22 years, which hurts less if you say it fast). I love Bela's work the closer to trad bluegrass he gets, love Earl, not so fond of listening to people who try to play like Earl though. I like hearing individuals, not clones. Wish I heard more banjos in NZ ...

Hi Nat, I think there is quite a lot of interest in playing the banjo in NZ, but even starter banjos are expensive and deter the would be picker, i am plugging away at this. Everything is so fragmented. This group is a small start. I wonder if we could get a list of bands that play the banjo ? in NZ . It would be neat if at some time in the future we could get a group enthusiasts and bands together for a weekend "banjo fest" all styles. Bela is a great advertisement for what can be done with a "bluegrass" banjo. The banjo sound is unique and more popular than most people think, from guitar players to uke banjo players, tenor banjo, banjitars, electric banjo, etc . The Dubliners, Fairport Convention, Steelye Span all got me going, the fiddle and the banjo were made for one another. There is the Twin City Stompers in Napier that play Dixie, Love it !.

Hi. I just joined the NZ group. I'm in Dunedin. I bought a epiphone 5 string in 2009 and cant leave it alone. Learning from books and starting to work out songs by myself. I'm hoping to find someone with a guitar, mandolin, bass or fiddle to play with. Thats me...

Hi everyone, I have been itching to get banjo-ing for almost a year now, and have finally reserved a Fender Rustler at Alistairs Music in Wellington. All things going well I should be playing in a couple of weeks.
