The Artiste Instruments Baritone Banjo Ukulele or Banjolele, “shouldn’t this Uke be more accurately called a Tenor Banjo tuned Chicago style? (DGBE), though they were usually 22 frets and called a plectrum banjo”.
This was the question raised by a customer who was confused by the Baritone Banjo Uke, a pre production unit and its tuning, I corrected this misnomer by pointing out the differing scale lengths of Banjos, and further detailed that the item in question was indeed a Baritone Banjo Uke.
Of course Tenor, Short Scale Tenor and Plectrum Banjos are not as popular as 5 string Banjos, the person who was asking the question knew something about banjos but not so much about scale lengths. As most of you probably know, those new wishing to know about banjos and recent converts to the banjo can be confused with the many types, including 6 string. The question received above shows an 8” pot Baritone Banjo Uke added to someone’s confusion.

Chicago style tuning DGBE dates back to the jazz age where Guitar players who could not play the banjo used the Plectrum Banjo and tuned it DGBE, 5 string banjos with the fifth string removed were used and still are, and according to the link below 6 string banjos were used in the jazz age!

Below is a link to the same site, and a good read about the evolution of the Banjo, a site well worth visiting!.

Do Banjo Uke’s count in the “Evolution” of the banjo?, or maybe the wrong usage of the terminology to Banjo enthusiasts?
Hmmmm!
