If you stop by Sacramento, check out the Fifth String Music Store. They usually have gold tones, gold stars as well as some decent used instruments. Also, if go to Folsom, check out Nicholson's Music Store. Luthier Paul Reimel works there and makes great open back banjos using exotic woods.

I'll second what Troy said, especially about Nicholson's. Depending upon how much time you have, Folsom might be a bit out of your way, though. It's about 30+- minutes east of the I-5 / US-50 junction.

Paul is a great guy. If I can ever find a decent old Vega or Orpheum pot, I'll definitely ask him to craft a neck and put everything together for me.

Safe journey -- WB

You may want to go by Gryphon Music in Palo Alto. Frank and Richard are two of the finest Luthiers west of the Miss. and the store always has a plethora good instruments.

Website is: gryphonstrings.com/

I agree with Greory about Gryphon. Frank is the only person that will touch my banjo. Jack Tuttle is also a very good teacher. I took lessons from him for about a year. Have fun.

Thanks folks,
I'm planing in going to Gryphon to check out Charles Waldman's woodies.
I'll check the map to see if I cam make Folsom, it sounds like it would be worth going a little out of the way.
Thanks again!
