Thought I might share this...
Being an Okie and having never been to the American Banjo Museum in downtown OKC, I figured it was time. I had friends in from out of town and it was 'Reggae-Fest' in downtown OKC, so we decided to make a weekend of it. And I of coarse brought my Oak/Cherry 2+ LeVan longneck with me!
When I got to the museum(with my 'jo), I very casually asked if I could store my banjo up front while I went on the tour and stated that if anyone wanted to 'talk shop', that I would love too once I was done. One of the board members happened to be there and paid very little attention to me as he directed me where to place my banjo for safe storage. So, I took the tour(awesome, btw, so many banjos I have only read about) and at the end, as I was about to walk out, the board member asked what I was working with. So I showed him : )
To say they were impressed with it would be an understatement! He almost didn't want to give it back to me! Of coarse they had me play a few songs, and next thing I know, I have a crowd of 20 or so people watching me play. I had to take pictures with people and explain why I didn't used picks and what clawhammer was and tell EVERYONE about who built it. Quite an ordeal!
I ended up storing my banjo at the museum while I enjoyed the festivities Reggae-Fest had to offer. When I came to pick the banjo back up, the board member yells "That's the guy! Show this guy your banjo and play us a few tunes!". Another crowd. More pictures and questions. I actually got invited to play in the stage area they have set up for money and tips(I declined b/c of time), and I exchanged information with the board member(who plays tenor banjo) to possibly sit in with their house band next time I am in town!
Interesting trip!
