The 5 Whisnant AA banjos

From bulland on 12/8/2011 6:48:46 AM

In the December issue of Bluegrass Unlimited, in the Notes and Queries section there is a picture of one of Johnnies AA banjos, with "cheaters".  This apparently belongs to a Richard McAnally (Tenn?).    I  have wondered for years who had the 5th banjo.  Now we may know.  Chris, Borge, Linda Slaughter, Johnnie's widow June and Richard McNally. The article also mentions the Indian banjo with an American Indian's  head on the head stock. I recall when he was making that one, but  I cannot recall the name of the women that has it.

I took lessons from Johnnie 1964-1966. In addtion to getting started learning to play, I developed a great respect and affection for Johnnie and June. They lived in a small house near Herndon, VA

Hey Bill, thanks for sharing your thoughts about Johnnie. I share similar feelings as well. I took lessons in the early 70's when they lived in a large white farm house in Ashburn, VA. He sure was a special guy! Sincerely, ~Christopher~

I just stumbled onto this group. A little while ago, I put a "Banjo Profile" of Paul Bock on BHO. Paul studied with Johnnie Whisnant. See:

Cheers,
