New 2016 OB-250

From Illinois Ban-Joe on 10/15/2016 8:59:09 PM

I just got my OB-250 and like everything about it but the strings.

I have arthritis in my hands and usually use light Deering brand strings (10-21w-13-11-10)

Ya think I will need to get a new set-up?

I have had an OB 250 since 2003. It is a great banjo. The strings that Gold Tone now recommends for it are just too thick for my taste. I have had the strings they recommend on it at times, but usually have had lighter strings. Most of the time I have owned that banjo I have used Gibson's Earl Scruggs mediums which are 10-12-14-22-10 or the John Pease strings of the same diameters. This works pretty nice to my taste, especially since over the past couple years I keep the banjo tuned to D or A.
I have tried the heavier strings and I think around 2007-8 Gold tone was pushing even heavier strings than they do now.

I have always have had a skin head on it which gives it more character. Of course, every time you change strings, even if you are keeping the same gauges, it is good to check out the set up, particularly the bridge placement and how tight you keep the head

I want to say the OB 250 is a great banjo. I have other banjos that are 19th century Boston treasures and a custom made banjo etc. but there is always something that I get out of the OB 250 that the other banjos cannot give me, although I wish it were not as heavy

I am planning on changing strings to Deerings and I just ordered a SS bridge for it.
I sit when I play so the weight isn't an issue for me
