Strings for WL 250 used as A or D banjo

From writerrad on 4/25/2016 10:29:28 AM

I am considering changing the strings on my WL-250 I have had mine since 2003 and always witha  skin head.  I must say though Gold tone skin heads seem to have a bad name, this head has stayed on the banjo for 13 years now and taken the tightening and loosening and tightening again that is the norm when youlive in Florida and end up playinjg outside a lot.

I am using Pearse"s John Hartford strings  which are O10 012 014 022 010.

They feel a bit too light and just not twangy enough.   I know standard strings for this banjo are thicker, but  I use this banjo as my D banjo, usually tuned up to   EDADa for D tunes or EC#AEa for A tunes.

Would the neck on this banjo take heavier strings? is there a grade of strings a bit thicker than this grade but not too heavy?

I use the banjo predominantly for playing with fiddlers and other string band situations doing both clawhammer and two finger style.  For gus cannot style and other forms of finger picking I use a backer louder banjo someone around here made for a friend which is essentially a tubaphone on steroids!

Anyone else use a WL-250 as an A or D banjo?
