Hi I have a gold tone wl250+ lefty. They do not come with a frailing scoop. Is it possible to carry out this alteration oneself, and if so what skill level does it involve. Would I need special tools to carry out this alteration. In other word how do I do it. Would the neck have to be reset? Or had I best leave it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Someone that knows what they're doing can do it in 3 or 4 minutes. If you don't know you can screw up your banjo in half that time. I'd take it to an old time banjo builder.
My 2 cents worth, and worth every penny.

Thanks Joe, Just cannot afford to take the chance of it ending up as firewood. So I'll put it in to the hand of a professional. Will the neck have to be lifted to bring the scooped section of the fingerboard up level with the tension ring? I like to know what will be involved when I have it done. also will this affect the action, plus will I then need the change the height of the bridge. I've got it all set up just fine, Don't want to loose it but would like the S scoop. Or should I leave it well alone and carry on as it is.
Sorry to go on, but it not just a banjo.

That is funny though I dont especially like Frailing Scoops, over the past 10 years I have had a wl250, I have run into lots of other players who have them with frailing scoups. I am sure they can be purchased with scoups. However I REALLY AGREE WITH EVERYONE ON THIS LIST THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE A LUTHIER WHO IS EXPERIENCED WORKING WITH BANJOS DO THAT

According to the Gold tone web site here goldtone.com/products/details/...48/WL-250, a frailing scoup is offered as standard equipment for this banjo and indeed the one in the picture has a frailing scoup. If yours is still new you can take it back, but it is wrong to say they do not come with a frailing scoup

Adding a frailing scoop the neck of the WL 250+ will screw up the inlay.
There is a solution, however. Have a luthier replace the stock bridge with a 3/4 inch bridge and readjust the neck.
That will raise your string off of the head of the banjo considerably. That is not a complex procedure for that banjo.

sorry didnt know about the tree of life. Frailing scooups are pretty overrated and certainly an innovation of revivalist banjo playing as opposed to traditional banjo playing or country. A great many frailers and old time banjoists do not understand that a little action makes a banjo sound the way it was designed and that good head tension will give nice action and sounds like that some think they get from frailing scoups. I have 4 full sized banjos with frets, and two have frailing scoups and two (my wl250) and a 19th century Fairbanks do not. I dont find much difference for frailing or even getting a chuck (something against I rarely hear among traditional banjoists) with or without a scoup. The difference is really in the action and head tension is key to good action for frailing/clawhamer etc.

would be pretty silly to get that inlay messed up by a scoup, although banjos are made to be played not looked at. If you want a scoup buy another banjo with a scoup.
