I heard on the TV news last night that handbag sellers tend to be a bit prejudice there......... Have you heard the story about the overweight, middle age, white, gay guy that was told they didn't have any pretty brightly colored bags with gold trim on them, when there plainly was one in the shop window.

gradelyduck - Posted - 08/14/2013:  00:08:53

Don't believe all that media toss.

The overweight, middle age, white, gay guy that was told they didn't have any pretty brightly colored bags with gold trim on them, when there plainly was one in the shop window.....is he also one of the wealthiest guys in the world?

Hmm, you'd think perhaps we would have heard of this chap. wink

Me thinks that the Swiss retailer is quite upset and embarrassed that he lost a very good potential customer due to some misguided behavior by his sales associate. Kinda funny.

Not if I was making them!

How much does a $38,000 handbag immediately depreciate? .... assuming one ever gets sold.

raybob - Posted - 08/14/2013:  07:31:07

Depending on who buys it the value just might go up  shock

Brian T - Posted - 08/14/2013:  07:39:03

With an estimated gross income for 2012 of $77,000,000, $38,000 for a purse doesn't seem like much.
Must have something blingy for TT's wedding.

PickSLicker - Posted - 08/14/2013:  08:33:03

With $77,000,000 she could buy one a day for 5 years and still have $8 million left over for lipstick!

Catullus put it well. He invited a friend to dinner but indicated that the friend would have to bring the food and the girl because Catullus had nothing but mothballs in his purse.

How many sacks of rice and beans and some seasoning could be bought to feed hungry people with $38,000? OK keep $100 to buy a handbag. I dont know anything about handbags but I am guessing you could get a FUNCTIONAL one for less that. What would make a handbag cost $38,000 other than to obtain "showoff status". Its like lighting cigars with $100 bills. The point of it is to say look how rich that person is.

John Allison - Posted - 08/14/2013:  10:03:32

Saw something about those high dollar handbags on the news the other night. Don't remember much about it but the $38K bill definitely rings a bell.

The deal was, she went to Switzerland for Tina T's wedding.

Yep. It is astounding at what the very rich are doing with their money. There is a growing class of ultra-wealthy people around the world living in a world that we cannot comprehend. Heck, a couple of private jet trips for a Wall Street or corporate CEO for his vacation dwarfs what some people pay for a handbag. I read about the lavish parties and social functions that some of these people throw and continue to be astounded.

The handbag shopper owns an aircraft that costs well over $50 million and costs $5-$6 thousand per hour to fly. I couldn't care less what she spends her money on.

Why would it be insane??   It would be insane not to market such a product if there are really buyers out there for $38,000 handbags.

That's how capitalism works.

Maybe the handbag makers and aircraft producers are charitable in their private lives.  Let's hope.

OK, here's what is puzzling me.  I'm frugal and tend to outraged at the rich living better than I do, like a lot of us.  But let's suppose someone purchased that bag.  Some of that money went to other people like the salesperson, the lady who cleans the shop, the people who work at the utilities that keep the lights and heat on at the shop, who then bought rice and beans to feed their families.  Some went to the shop owner (if the purse had actually been sold) who may buy other goods and services and that money may eventually work its way down to people who buy rice and beans.  And the designer may sell so many purses they build a villa constructed by laborers who buy rice and beans with their wages.

Isn't there such a thing in economics that explains how a dollar spent works its way through the economic chain to give a multiplier effect?  It seems it's not the spending that's the problem so much as the hoarding and concentration of wealth.  Would the world be better off if the $38,000 was lost in the sofa cushions instead of being spent on a purse?

kipperr may be along shortly to straighten me out on this.

I doubt it.

That's pretty much the "trickle down" theory of economics in a nutshell, and so long as the folks at the top of the bell curve keep on passing the bucks down, the folks in the middle and at the bottom will eventually get a small share.

That is a very astute observation and very correct. What's even better is that she has created that wealth all on her own, and not forcibly taken it from anyone. So she created wealth all on her own, and that money has spread out to enrich many others, the same way Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and countless others, whether huge companies or small businesses, have done.

The "hoarding" you look down on is a misrepresentation. The rich don't stuff their cash under a mattress; that is the true definition of hoarding. When a wealthy person, or you and I, puts their money in a bank savings account, that money is loaned out by the bank, and the multiplier effect occurs. Or when people with money invest it, that helps everyone from business start-ups to state and local governments, etc. etc. Savings and investing is a big driver of an economy.

It has absolutely nothing to do with "trickle down." That is a political phrase and has nothing to do with what KE discussed. No "trickle down" theory has ever been espoused by an economist.

You are making a common mistake in letting politicians tell you what to think about economic policy. Most of them are woefully ignorant on the subject.

You, of all people, should know better than to claim that last one.

Second clue:

1. Who said anything about what an economist has said? Well, you said "That's pretty much the "trickle down" theory of economics in a nutshell." Economic theory comes largely from economists (except your theory). So you were the one who brought it up. I do not claim to be an economist, only to have an interest in the subject.

2. I wasn't criticizing what "goes on inside your head." I wouldn't care to venture there. I am criticizing what you wrote; there is a difference, although the false criticism charge did allow you to ignore answering my points.

As for letting other people tell you what to think - do you really want me to believe that you came up with the idea of "trickle-down economics" all on your own? That you didn't hear it promoted by a politician or party?

Having a contrary opinion isn't the same as having an original one.

Frostymama - Posted - 08/15/2013:  09:11:05

People can spend their money on whatever they want... But if I bought a $38k handbag, it had better have 4 wheels, a V8, and one hell of a Bose sound system.

Did she lie, or did she take the classy route and choose to let it drop?  Here's what she actually said:

“I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I’m really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I’m sorry that I said it was Switzerland,” Winfrey said, speaking at the premier of Lee Daniels’ “The Butler.”

Swiss tourism officials and the boutique owner apologized for the incident last week, but Winfrey insists there’s no need.

“It’s not an indictment against the country or even that store,” she said. “It was just one person who didn’t want to offer me the opportunity to see the bag. So no apologies necessary from the country of Switzerland. If somebody makes a mistake in the United States do we apologize in front of the whole country? No!”

fivebranch - Posted - 08/15/2013:  09:30:10

She didn't mention the store. No need to apologize. Then what in the world was she trying to accomplish with these allegations?? The store clerk denided these alligations. You think maybe there's a in store camera????

How does the proverb about fools and their money go? I guess it's all about 'status' and display.  And yet if I saw someone with a handbag that I knew had that price tag (I nearly wrote '...was worth that much' until I realized the irony) I would assume they were a desperate attention-seeking, materialistic snob and would give them the widest of wide berths. I would dive over a high hedge into a muddy field to avoid them. Then again I guess that type of individual would  similarly wish to avoid me too...

...thankfully.

I wonder who the "desperate, attention-seeking, materialistic snob(s)" were who bought one of these:

At $55,000, you could buy the purse and have $13,000 left over for a "pretty nice" but lesser banjo.
