I was just wondering what a Brand new Gibson Banjo cost and was looking at the least expensive. Then I was curious what the most expensive was. I was shocked when I found out. The model called "The Super Earl" cost $55,506. After finding that out I began to wonder how much there most expensive electric guitar cost. That was $20,000 less than the banjo. I was not looking to buy one but was just curious of the price. Now I know why curiosity killed the cat. If you find this to hard to believe here is a link.

I don't know but I am guessing a few due to the reviews at the bottom. On the page it says they gave the first one they made to Earl Scruggs himself at a ceremony.

I like to look at Elderly Instruments vault from time to time to check the wild prices some of the old stuff brings.

Take an Earl Scruggs model, add some abalone, some engraving...then throw in a portrait of Earl. $55K? The portrait must be worth about $47K!!!!

I really don't believe that I'd want a portrait of someone on my banjo....even if it was Earl.

Check out the Super Earl at the Musician's Friend web site, and read the reviews. Not a serious one there when I checked, but they are funny.

For 50...G's you would think they could be more creative than...Super Earl?

why are you stinking if your rich ? are smelley if your poor ? what are you if your middle class ? just kinda of sweet smelling , know wonder we left your country !

granderman - Posted - 02/20/2010:  03:49:07

No Bill your anti success , you pre judge somebody for the amount of money, they have been able to earn , by applying the word stinking to them, you know like all brits are stinking ! Not good when you don't know all the facts. Your comment is only class war fare , and is classless . What about realizing that Earl Scruggs could afford any one of those banjos , because he learned thru great effort to play the banjo better than any one at the time. Earl lives in a beautiful home , oh my God Earl Scruggs is stinking rich ! by the way the most expensive banjo is Earls , what to you think it would bring ? priceless i would guess ! pitiful your view of successful people and worthless !

Glenn Tate - Posted - 02/20/2010:  07:58:54

I think I would rather have 3 or 4 pre war's than a Super Earl.

I recall that the B&D Ne Plus Ultra # 9 banjos were quite expensive for their day. I have no idea what they would cost to make now days. The more fancy the banjo, the more they cost. I have been watching the Dan Knowles ebony banjo thread on the Hangout. This gives an idea about how much time, expertise and effort it takes to build a highly decorated "art" banjo. When the banjo becomes the vehicle for artistic expression the sky is the limit.

Wow.... I think "stinking rich" or "filthy rich" are fairly common phrases, just like "dirt poor." I am guessing that the offending post has been removed, but boy, it must have been bad. From here it looks like some valium (and some spell checking) are in order. No need to get so bent.....

feldspar , it was bad ,bigotry at it's finest ! As you can see Godtopia removed it when i showed him that because Earl had worked hard to hone his passion into a profitable business endeavor that did not soil the man making him stinking rich! i would not refer to some one as dirt poor ,or stinking Rich because they could or could not afford a banjo. it seems as though around the world but especially in America success has become a bad thing to be punished reviled . I lived in a house with no heat no air con , windows painted shut for ten years while i struggled to make my business a success. For the last 2 years all i have heard is, evil ,stinking rich , not doing their fare share . In that same two year period i have given 2 stelling and one Williams banjos away to deserving young players , I have donated heavily to music camps and sponsored young players into banjo camps who could not afford to go. Goldtopia thinks because i worked hard to master my craft I now stink ! Personally Being one of the 2% that pay 40% of the taxes for the US population I don't think that effort stinks. I think casually painting a brush stroke on a whole group is in bad taste .As far as the spelling must have been my dyslexia another thing i concord . I vow not to let those insults go , for i am proud of success ! poor ole Earl never knew he was going to become stinking just because he was successful now give me the valium !

goldtopia - Posted - 02/22/2010:  02:31:01

OK. I was not getting at Earl. There are very rich people who buy things without really appreciating what they have got, whilst most us us have to save hard and value what we have. Stinking rich is just an expression, I should have guessed its not an expression used much in America. I removed the post to keep the peace. I apologise if it was taken the wrong way.

I know this is just a used banjo, but I'll nominate it for the most expensive I've ever seen:

If there's going to be a contest for "Most Expensive", without regard for how it sounds, I'm going to offer a one-of-a kind "Squared Eel".

It will be personally detailed, not with an ordinary marker, but with a MAGIC marker!

And this ultimate gem will be called the "INFINITY SQUARED EEL", because infinity squared will be the price tag.
In gold coins.

The first person to send me a down payment of a minimum of 200 kilograms of gold coin, will receive a document informing the other collectors that she or he is the owner of this item, and the item will be delivered when the rest of the payment has been received.

Y'allTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97EfvhFgRBY

Twayne King will be allowed a $20 discount, because he did such a fine job of photoshopping my original Squared Eel onto the Tenniel illustration of the Mad Hatter.
However, if somebody else ships me the gold FIRST, that is the person who becomes the owner.
I shall not be making more than one Infinity Squared Eel, at the price stated.

Goldtopia i except your apology , i hope you see my point , that hard work can be rewarded greatly. i will move on from the subject .

I'm always impressed with those who have earned it. I met 2 rich people, one is a venture capitalist, the other runs a (now chain of) junkyard. I like the junk yard guy best.
The "nouveau riche"? Nothing but abscesses of excesses. Their track records usually show more money than brains.

dsweet - Posted - 02/25/2010:  06:43:46

I'll jump into this fray by saying that I had to give my ex the house in
order to keep the banjer...and it was a gol' dern expensive house.
