Playing on my 5 string is a relatively new hobby for me, but I've always been a firearm enthusiast. Anybody else here into shooting or hunting? Hope this isn't taboo here (given today's political climate regarding the subject).

If not, anybody want to share their interests in this area?

I guess this is my way of breaking the ice, I'm fairly new here. I have to admit I'm a bit of a gun nut (not in a bad way) and I'm just wondering if there are any like minded folks here.

I dabble in amateur gunsmithing and have a penchant for old fashioned rifles, shotguns, and the venerable Model of 1911 pistol.

"Any shooters here?"

Nah.  Probably only about 90% of the population.    approve

Gun control threads are verboten, however.   They get too nasty too quickly.

You misunderstand.    There are gun threads here in off-topic all the time -and last I heard that's just fine.

Just no fair weighing in either pro or con about gun control subjects in particular.    We try to stay friendly around here and that subject simply provoked too many fireworks and lost tempers.

I hunt shoot and have a few guns around all old. Bad thing is its turkey season and I am to busy to hunt.  Every now and then freinds come over and shoot. last time it was all flintlocks always a hoot.  Steve

I've always wanted my own moving/knock down/stand up again targets like we had at the m16 range.

The kids here start shooting around 11 or 12 years old.

If you've always shot it's just second nature to get good at it and fun.

Kerry, don't let Lester scare you off,we will talk about guns until the mods shut it down.in regard to your question, I really like guns ,and have always enjoyed shooting long range as well as pistols.I like to trade guns.ammo has got scarce and has cut down on my shooting,22cal are $5 for 50 when you can find them.

steve davis - Posted - 05/20/2013:  04:17:57

A .44 magnum will knock a refridgerator over.Pretty cool.

I've got more 98 mausers than I can count, a fine Springfield 1911, a 1949 marlin 336 30-30 deluxe with a serial # in the low 500's; an old model 52 Winchester, 3 elephant guns, and I recently sold a 12 bore double barrel rifle.
My dad was one of those crodgety, opinionated gun writers. Been around firearms and some rather colourfull people all my life.

Martian - Posted - 05/20/2013:  04:52:32

archery count? I do have guns, but LOVE bow hunting. Have got many deer, no turkey yet , workin on it, and one 310 lb black bear in Saskatchewan. I did get to say the following on stage a few weeks back, I told the crowd,,,, " most of you know , I am an avid bow hunter, last week , I got my first turkey, with a bow", after a small round of applause, I said," scared the crap out of the people in frozen foods" welcome to the hangout

BConk - Posted - 05/20/2013:  05:03:48

I'm fond of those 1911s myself. I had three of them at one point, all Dan Wessons, sold off two - keeping a Pointman in 10mm with a second barrel for 40 S&W.

Sweet gun!

After that, I'd say my favorite gun is my bolt action .22 caliber CZ 452 Ultra Lux - with a 28" barrel and match peep sights.

dat - Posted - 05/20/2013:  05:37:09

I used to shoot just about every day, then it got to where I would just shoot on the weekends, now I'm lucky to get out and shoot much of any.   I still would make time to shoot, but bullets are scarce and very expensive when you find them.

You said a mouthful. You can forget finding any ammo at Wal-Mart.

I have been called a "gun nut" but actually I'm just a nut that happens to like guns. I have several 1911's as well as many other handguns, a few shotguns, and several rifles including a couple surplus ones. I have a range on my property and teach folks to shoot.

Pigs are a problem in my area so they are great "knock down" targets to help sharpen your marksmanship skills.

Ammo prices have gotten out of hand but I think allot of that is because people are buying it to resell at jacked up prices and/or they are buying way more than they will ever use out of fear that it will not be available in the future.

Used to shoot NRA High Power Service Rifle and Service Pistol Matches when I was in the Marines. I have a nice Colt HBAR that I had lots of work done on to make it very competitive (free floated barrel, 1/2 moa sites, trigger job, added weights in butt and fore end for balance, replaced with stainless Douglas 1 in 8 twist barrel to shoot 80 gr bullets for long range) and a Baretta M9 that has been accurized as well. Haven't shot either one if a decade maybe more. I guess my rifle is now obsolete since it doesn't have all kinds of rail mounted lazers and optics hanging off of it, and the barrel is too long.
My eyes are not so good anymore either and I do most of my shooting with a scope now. I like single shot rifles and muzzle loaders for hunting because it makes me take my time and make sure I have a well placed shot because there most likely wont be time for a follow up.
That being said, the last time I went hunting with my muzzle loader I got 3 deer on the same hunt because for some reason they kept running around in circles and gave me time to reload. I might have been able to kill a couple more but I only had 3 bullets. (and no more room in the freezer)

Missing 1 night-time tracer shot (out of 20) kept me from shooting "expert".

bkdraft - Posted - 05/20/2013:  07:46:25

Have a fair collection of guns and bows, used to hunt a lot, now not as much but still love to get outdoors and hunt when I can.

BConk - Posted - 05/20/2013:  07:53:25

One way to avoid exorbitant ammo prices is to shoot cap and ball revolvers. My favorite is my stainless steel Ruger Old Army - first year of production, 3 digit serial number and no stupid warning statement stamped into the barrel..

Crusty - Posted - 05/20/2013:  07:59:33

My favorite to shoot is my 50 cal flintlock muzzle loader.  It's a real challenge to hold on target while all the pre-ignition actions are happening right in your face.

Shoot a little trap from time to time, that's about it for now.
.22cal Savage with Accutrigger for plinking.
Shot several ISU events like Standard, Rapid-Fire, never more than 10,000 rounds per year.
Shot 7mm/.308 Unliminted Handgun events in IHMSA (Silhouette).
Suffered from SAS (shotgun aquisition syndrome) but beat it = 10/12 are long gone.

I have hunted since I was a kid. I love deer hunting and turkey hunting. I'm also an avid bow hunter. I don't shoot as much as I used to, as ammo is so scarce and expensive. I have found one place in the last 3 month's or so that had 22 long rifle cartridges and they were 14 dollars for 50. Needless to say, they are still in the store if someone else didn't buy them. I have a decent stock of them anyway.

WHAT KERRY? HUH? Did you say shooting ? I don"t hear as well as I used to. Think it is because of all the shooting and hunting I have done over the years

I didn't start wearing hearing protection 'till about 10 years ago,   I wish I had started 30 years ago

I have shot since I was a kid. I grew up in my grandad's sporting goods store in the 60's. I finally started building precision bolt guns for competition and shot them for 20 yrs in regional competition matches. I even made my own 6mm jacketed bullets for a few years. My eyeballs finally got fuzzy and the cost got out of hand so I no longer do it but for fun. A great hobby for sure.

It's good to be handy with guns in case you ever ever want to hit what you are aiming at and not be a danger to yourself or others.

MOUNTAIN GOAT - Posted - 05/20/2013:  10:29:29

Been hunting since 1963. Been building guns since a few years after that. Was also a taxidermist in younger days. Still build custom long range single shot guns and revolvers. I really like long range guns. It is the test of how good of a gun you can make and good you can shoot it in a real situation, not at a bench. The longest single shot kill so far from my gun is 840 yards, Kodiak bear witnessed by five people.

"Scare him off"?   By telling him gun threads are just fine in off-topic?   You have an amazing talent for seeing things that never existed.

Also an amazing talent for disrespecting the guy who's been nice enough to provide this free venue for you, and those who perform unpaid yeoman service trying to moderate it.

I figure if this thread is shut down it will be your mouth that will do it,you have succeeded in picking another fight.me seeing "things that never existed ??? it never until you brought it up with your big warning. disrespect the mods??hardly , I said it would go until the mods deemed it was a violation of rules. and you didn't tell all your first post was "they get nasty to quickly" that is hardly an endorsement to the guy..whats your problem?

now back to the thread, any center fire ammo is just too expensive for me to shoot right now ,I just shoot 22cal and make a challenge out of that.I am using left over turkey loads 12 ga  for Coyote in  close and 22 mag up to 100 plus yds. just need to camo up  and call' em in close. smiley

Possom - Posted - 05/20/2013:  13:23:44

Yea lots of shooters on here...banjos and guns go hand in hand. You pick as bad as I do you better keep a straight shooting gun and a sharp knife nearby!

Got a Savage .243 and 7mag couple of 12 ga shotguns 20 ga, muzzleloader, 22, 9mm M&P and a 45 1911(that's my baby) and goes literally everywhere I go. We did soundcheck this past Saturday and were on the verge of starting our set before I remembered I had it on me and needed to go put it in the truck. Everything i own gets used. Not for recreation but for some specific purpose. Hunting, protection etc...

In the market for a smaller revolver in 357 for the wife. Preferabley something hammerless...then a single action in the same for me :)

dat - Posted - 05/20/2013:  13:25:46

shooting is relaxing, if it's poking holes in paper, knocking over tin cans, shooting beer cans filled with water at one or two hundred yards, two liter coke bottles at 3 to 5 hundred yards, or plinking around at 25  or 50 yards and a 22.  it's great mind/ body/  machine control, takes your mind off of everything except what you are doing right then.

the S&W airweight is a great little gun, kinda bad recoil shooting 357 as small as it is, but the 38's go through smooth. normally can be picked up for less than 5

Mexican Kerry - Posted - 05/20/2013:  13:38:56

Thanks for the responses folks. Gotta agree, shooting can get expensive, and rolling your own isn't always much cheaper.

I've never tried knocking a fridge over with my .44, might have to try it haha.

dat - Posted - 05/20/2013:  13:41:09

the 44 is a great hog and short range deer gun,   I have some home loads that I shoot through the ruger carbine that will knock a deer down hard,    they aren't comfortable shooting in a handgun

steve davis - Posted - 05/20/2013:  13:45:22

I love making 2 holes in the paper with 3 shots using open iron sights.
Very satisfying.

dat - Posted - 05/20/2013:  13:48:55

or making 1 jagged hole smaller than a quarter with 9 shots at 150 yards and a Rem 700 7 mm

BC - Posted - 05/20/2013:  14:05:35

Shooting???? Not much, only since I was six years old which was about 57 years ago. Still have my first 22 rifle and 410 shotgun I started with, along with 57 years of new additions.

The cap and ball revolver sounded like a good idea. That is something I have not tried. Sounds like something I would enjoy.

Seems like I never have enough time to shoot. School and summer jobs take up most of the time.

Henry Golden Boy .22 LR

Ruger model 77 .25-06

Remington 870 20 ga

Winchester model 74 .22 LR made in 1949

Heritage Arms Rough Rider .22 LR/mag revolver

and my first gun -- H&R single barrel .410

Haven't seen .22's at Wal-Mart for a long time. A store employee said that every time they get them in, a bunch of people get all of them early in the morning. Even have signs up saying that you can only buy one bulk pack at a time.
