Nice Itacud! keep it up.

I have been working on this for a few weeks now (with the help of my awesome teacher), trying to iron out all of the kinks. Fist time trying to record it. Everything always seems 100x more difficult as soon as you hit that record button :)

Great post-a-thon idea.  Your posts sound good and you're bound to make rapid progress.  yes

I figured more beginners would post. I'll add one (my first MP3 post). Title "I'm Using My Bible for a Roadmap". I tried to record "Blackberry Blossum" but could not get it right. I started learning to play about 10 months ago.

Yep, I figured the flood gates of newbie songs would be unleashed upon the BHO.... But hey, it's still early. I think we all sound decent for noobs that we are.... Motivates me to improve my sound for sure....Hoping to see some more songs pop up soon!!

This is after four months. I've been teaching myself timing is off a bit and a few bad notes but I try.

Hey good pickin folks!

It's hard enough learning to play the banjo let alone turning on a mic, then it's really tough.

Keep it up and enjoy.

Great start fellers! My beginnings were nothing to brag about either! mikesven I like some of the parts you have there with the song Bully of the Town! I'd like to learn some of those licks myself! Great job!

An english....North English folk song, better known as the Geordie Anthem....this is heard at any terraces occupied by the toon army as Newcastle United supporters are known ....Two months into the banjo and I have applied my Janet Davis taught rolls, pinches and licks to this tune....it's a bit ropey and forgive the singin'...but why'aye man it's a gayme...... CJ

ITACUD - Posted - 11/09/2012:  04:00:43

Jarvoid, I can't even imagine singing and playing at the same time....Props to you for being able to coordinate all those things together.

WayneConrad - Posted - 11/10/2012:  10:46:52

What a great topic.  Thanks, Itacud.  You guys are pretty good!

I'm two months into banjo, going through the Janet Davis book.  I took a break from the book to learn "I'll fly away," a very pretty tune.  This is Rick McKeon's arrangement

The pops are not there for old-timey effect.  There's something amiss in my computer's sound system.

There is no determined period of time that the speed will come, but it will.  Work on playing cleanly regardless of the speed and soon enough the speed will come.  Too many want to rush the speed by sloppy picking and when the speed comes, they play a blazing fast sloppy mess of notes, just like they practiced.

I think it'd be fun to add to this now and then so we can see each other's progress over time.

This is a month later than my last recording.  I've been picking for three months now.  I'm still liking hymns, 'cause most of them don't have to be played so fast!

Here are my attempts at some songs. Finally figured out how to do this using my I-phone and Macbook. Trust me it was about 5+ takes for each to sound decent. I'm at 1 year in. Some are too fast and I missed some notes. My bad. Enjoy.  I was using my new Rigel banjo.

Dang, Mr. Holler!  That sounds good!   Same to you, Mr. Conrad.  You guys are really doing well.  How many of you have experience in other instruments before the banjo?  Also, how often do you practice?  These all sound considerably better than I do, which is no poor mouth.  I'm just saying some folks have the knack or history and it is good to tell them.

Chadman - Posted - 12/24/2012:  19:17:54

awesome, some good picking in this thread! I'm looking forward to getting to the 1 year mark so I to can reflect on my progress.. I record myself periodically, will be nice to compare down the road.

I'm about 8 lessons into my banjo journey (weekly half hour sessions with banjo teacher and average an hour to two of daily practice at home). I would like to contribute but so far learned a few small tunes. Mostly they cover the items my teacher is showing me ie: forward rolls, backward rolls, alternating rolls, pinching, hammer on's, pull offs and slides. She's done teaching for the holidays and I believe when I start back in January my first tune to learn will be Boil'em cabbage down. Looking forward to it!

WayneConrad - Posted - 12/24/2012:  20:42:34

@Chadman, Boil 'dem Cabbage down is great.  It's the first thing I played that sounded like a song, and not just an exercise.

@rgoad, Thanks!  I played the soprano recorder in grade school, and after that I took some lessons in flute.  Quit that, though.  Try being a boy in sixth grade and playing the flute.  You can imagine the... let's call it "social pressure."  A decade later I started learning piano, but quit after a few months when I got frustrated at my small hands (I'm sorry to say I didn't much stick-to-it-ness then).  Then nothing for 30 years, until now.  I've got to think that those long-ago experiences have helped, but there's no way to tell.  I practice about 30-60 minutes a day on weekdays, and a few hours a day on weekends.

This is my favorite thread--I love hearing y'all play.  I hope more people post their beginner tunes.

@ rgoad, I appreciate the comment. I have been playing guitar for about 15 years. I always loved the banjo and thought I'd try and learn it again. (I tried back in college) Some skills transfer over but 95% do not. So its like learning everything all over again. I try and practice for about 1 hour a day. Somedays I get more and some less. I started with Youtube lessons and moved on to the Murphy Method and still use those lessons. I also take 1 hour lessons every 2 weeks. I also use a banjo board and practice my rolls and stuff like that at work. I find even if you have 15 minutes is better than no practice at all. I try and work on something that I'm stuck on. After a couple tries I play something I know, so not to get too frustrated.

Everyone sounds good to me. I agree with Wayne Conrad, this is a very cool thread. I often hear the more experienced players with their MP3 and get a little discouraged, but its nice to hear folks just starting out and in the early stages like me. Thanks ITACUD for starting this thread.

k, here goes a simple version of Jingle Bells. I'll try and record the few other little tunes my teacher has gotten me to learn and post them in the next day or so.

Both nice, Chad, although the melody of 'Do Lord' is easier for me to find.  Could be my speakers.

Chadman - Posted - 12/26/2012:  15:39:01

I hear ya rgoad on the jingle bells melody. the other week when i went in to play it back for my teacher I had explained one of the measures just doesn't sound right.. when she played it, sounded ok (ofcourse! lol) so I still got some work to do on that one i think. But luckily these are all just practice items! lol if I make any progress on it, i'll post it back up. thanks for the comments.

What a good idea for a topic, and what a great bunch of contributions! I'm about two weeks into re-starting my banjo "career" -- I had a banjo twenty years ago and could play just a couple of old-timey tunes, have just now built a new "Fireside" from a Backyard Music kit. Fortunately for all of us I don't have a mike for my computer yet, but give it a few weeks and I'll post something that will make you all sound even better than you already do. Meanwhile, happy new year to all.

rgoad - Posted - 12/26/2012:  18:14:31

Chad, I have a sort of strange perception trick my mind plays on me.  I hear different things when my eyes are closed than when they are open.  So at times I will hear complete gibberish so all I do is close my eyes to hear the notes their properly.   In your Jingle Bells I could not latch on to the first beat of the measure, so all the note phrases were miss sequenced in my head.  When I closed my eyes I heard gaps in the tune and an extra quarter note at the end of the second measure.  I find I do the same thing.  I think my active mind assumes notes that are there, and notes that are not, and I don't realise what I have done or not done, as it were.  This is another reason to record tunes and even let others listen to them.  I find the same thing is useful when I let other people proof read my writing.  I suppose some day I shall have to do it.

Chadman - Posted - 12/27/2012:  22:56:34

@rgoad, I'm always open to comments and suggestions. I've played acoustic guitar for about 15 years now.. kinda picked it up by watching others.. i can play all the major and minor chords in either barred or chord patterns and a few others too. I never got into leads or anything like that with acoustic guitar as most everyone i jammed with were real musicians and could play lead without issue.. so i was more of a rhythm guy. I've recorded myself then and still do now and send it off to musician friends and get their feedback. It's a great way to learn and grow as a musician. The two things I like about banjo, is that no one else i know can play it.. and the fact that when you play banjo other than vamping, you are playing essentially as lead.. so that's kinda cool and I can't wait to learn more.. playing banjo is something i've wanted to do for a long time. Thanks again for the feedback.

it would be cool for other newbies to post some stuff they are working on or either their practice items.. and state what week they are at.. I'm at week 8 right now, so I've done 8 half hour weekly sessions with my banjo teacher.

I have a few other tunes in my library, all of which are practice items my teacher has given me. I've noted which weekly session she taught them to me. Can't wait to look back and check my progress six months or even a year from now. will be cool to compare for sure.

So after a few months going solo, I found an instructor and he has me working on this one..... I know it's probably less than 1/2 speed but I absolutely love this simple melody..... Glad everyone is posting up songs, and enjoying it as much as me.....

See you here again soon.

This is a great thread for us noobs. I'll have to record more often.

Here I am at the 17 month point, and today's recording doesn't sound much better than it did a year ago Or is it just me? I played this five times straight with no errors before I got the recorder out. Tell me what you think.

@faulknej, i can hear a noticeable difference between the first and second recording.. little better pace, less stop/hesitation points.. sounded ok to me

are you taking lessons or self teaching?

Really great work from everyone on this thread!  It's this kind of community encouragement that helps us all get better.

Here's another recent one: I got some decent balance on the vocals out of the webcam this time.

A little more simple strumming based in this tune, I sway off time pretty bad here and there, but the target audience (my wife) loved it!
