Rgoad, I was surprised at how easy (relatively speaking) it was when I picked up the fretless.
stetix01 - Posted - 12/17/2013: 07:17:33
I live in Tennessee. if you play banjo, you have to know this one...its the law! (p.s. sorry for the abrupt ending)

Steve, that was a good Rocky Top. I like the use of the metronome.

I switched from three-finger to clawhammer about three months back. So, although my left hand knows a few things, my right hand is a beginner again. Well, I guess my right hand was still a beginner in three-finger, too. It's just more of a beginner now.

Hi,
Here is our jam group doing a rendition of a Bob Dylan song. We played this at our Tuesday nite jam this week.

Please post comments - please be our fan if you like our songs.
Thanks.
rgoad - Posted - 01/09/2014: 17:45:09
Very nice, Cryo. I like that tune alot. The volume seemed a little low on my 'puter, but that is only a sample of one.
Cryo - Posted - 01/09/2014: 23:10:45
Thanks for the inout. I will try to raise the volume and repost this weekend. Need to get the mo3 software that does this.
Cryo - Posted - 01/10/2014: 05:17:31
OK. I uploaded new file - volume boosted by 20 db of gain using mp3gain.

That's much better! Sounds like a good time and learning experience.

We have a lot of fun at these jams. You are welcome to come and join us if you are in the area.

Well this is me at one year and 3 weeks. I sound a lot better when I don't record so it must be the recorder that's making all the mistakes!!
Really though, I think my progress is okay but there still a long, long way to go.

Thanks for the encouragement.
My playing is not very clean and precise. There's a lot of noise when my thumbpick hits the head. It's not up to speed. I can sort of draw out the melody but my rolls are still pretty uneven, both in timing and timbre. I feel like there's still a long way to go there but thanks for the good word.
banjobrewer - Posted - 02/08/2014: 08:24:43
Just thought I would make my first song post. I am a self taught guy with no music back ground at all, so it is a bit raw. One is Jesse James and the other started ou as darling cora worked out by ear but turned into something totally different.

I think you sound pretty good. You sound more than just a beginner.
banjobrewer - Posted - 02/08/2014: 11:08:48
Thanks, I started about 11 months ago. It is hard to evaluate your self. I never play with anyone to compare in person. I am always impressed with how well everyone on this thread sounds. Probably my favorite thread going.
ITACUD - Posted - 02/08/2014: 12:15:54
Yeah, Banjobrewer...you sound real good. I really like the cora song....makes me want to learn it.....sounds like you enjoy playing it and you don't sound like a beginner at all.
C Nyal de Kaye - Posted - 02/08/2014: 12:24:00
BB you say "It is hard to evaluate your self."
I think it is almost impossible.
You sound good to me anyway.
rgoad - Posted - 02/08/2014: 13:27:58
Yes, you sound very good especially for being self taught. Do you play with other people?
Debs - Posted - 02/08/2014: 13:28:41
You're sounding good, banjobrewer, I really like your version of Jesse James. Stick with it, you're doing great!!
banjobrewer - Posted - 02/08/2014: 13:44:55
Thanks everyone! Good to hear some feed back.
I have never played with anyone, but am trying to set up something with a guitar playing cousin of mine.
rgoad - Posted - 02/08/2014: 13:49:19
I need to start playing with other people now. I think it would help, probably a step every beginner will take.
ITACUD - Posted - 02/08/2014: 14:09:47
I've started playing and learning songs together with a new but good fiddler... Or as she says, violinist, and it's super rewarding when it works out!
banjobrewer - Posted - 02/08/2014: 14:37:12
Yep, my timing is probably awful. I can't wait until I can sit in on a jam at a festival or any group for that matter. Just not an old time scene around here.
rgoad - Posted - 02/08/2014: 20:21:47
Richard, you might be surprised if you know where to look for old time. I bet if you use this site and maybe go to some of the good events like Battleground and Midwest Banjo Camp you'd find quite a few in the grass around home.
banjobrewer - Posted - 02/09/2014: 06:40:18
You are probably right rgoad. I have looked quite a bit, and figure that sooner or later I'll find something. I went to battleground last summer and it was great watching all the jams going on. I was just not ready to play with anyone then.
rgoad - Posted - 02/09/2014: 07:05:55
Richard, I'll go further: I grew up in Tennessee and Kentucky would favorably compare the Old Time music in the Midwest. You really should look in the BHO events calendar and maybe even post a thread looking for people to play with in your area.

Good job! It's amazing how much sustaining power this tune has had over the years. Glad you posted it and good to see your progress.
rgoad - Posted - 02/26/2014: 19:33:07
Good one, Ribs. Liked the rolls. You may have sped up a bit at about the 1:00 mark. But, hey, it is a good piece!
ITACUD - Posted - 03/02/2014: 14:24:10
Sounding good Ribtickler. Here's one I've started working on. Old Joe Clark in key of D.

Hey guys i`m back. I am now at just over a year into teaching myself some banjo so I thought I show a few vids to check out my progress. my fingers have definitely sped up though I still need alot of work to smooth things out, but learning new tunes is easier now than it was 6 months ago.
I am enjoying this so much I decided to go ahead and order a custom Hatfield banjo, i can`t wait! should be done sometime around july.
there are definitely still mistakes in the tunes especially when the camera is rollin, but I am getting better at not screwing up so much when recording..lol
bluenote23 - Posted - 03/07/2014: 06:37:41
You sound good. I think you're passing beyond the beginner stage!
rgoad - Posted - 03/08/2014: 08:23:16
Yep, you are moving on. However, because your progress is an inspiration to us we won't vote you off the beginner thread as you improve. ![]()

I've been following this post for a while, and I'm finally moving into the realm of contributing. ![]()
About 10 months ago I started playing and learning from Banjo Ben Clark.Com (which I've really enjoyed). I've never played an instrument before or really studied music in any depth, so it's been great to wander into this world of trying to make my own music. Here are three songs that I've learned so far. I could play them all a bit faster, but they get sloppy fast.
I started on Unclouded Day about a month ago, so it's still reaaalllly slow.

Sounds nice and clear, Chuck. I like 'She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain' because even *I* can play it. 'Unclouded Day' is very pretty and worth the trouble. I think banjos have some tunes just built into them. I dropped my banjo on the stairs once and it played the first four bars of 'Cripple Creek' before it hit the first floor.
ChuckHenry - Posted - 04/07/2014: 17:36:16
Thanks! Now that I have a microphone, I want to challenge myself to learn at least one new tune a month (all the way through) and record it. I figure it will give me a good goal to work on week in and week out. I'll also be able to look back and *hopefully* see that I've improved over time.

Everyone is sounding great. Got me in the mood to upload a few songs on a new cherry banjo.
