That is really terrific. I found FMB to be a real challenge and after 8 months (!) I am only now getting the hang of it. You're almost there in two weeks. Congratulations and keep it up!

This is a wonderful post a thon idea! Great idea! Earl probably wasn't all that great when he started either!! One hundred-fifty and counting! Wow!,
rgoad - Posted - 08/18/2013: 16:18:50
Learning FMB so soon sounds very difficult to me. Do you fellows just do it on your own or does your instructor recommend it?
icwc - Posted - 08/20/2013: 11:47:18
After 3 months and no musical experience here is my attempt at Cripple Creek. At age 62 I always wanted to play the banjo, well maybe by 80 I'll sound a little better. Love this site and love trying to play.

Good job, icwc! Did you teach that to yourself, or do you have an instructor?

Well that is really good. I have a sort of hit and miss with Youtube. Mostly miss. I enjoy the music can't usually figure it out just watching. What other tunes are you trying? I would also recommend you find at least a couple real people to play with. Sounds like you are really coming along.

It's about the fourth song my teacher gave me. He probably figures everyone wants to try. Funny thing is my teacher never gave me cripple creek. I did some of it on my own but he hasn't showed it to me. I appreciate all your input here by the way.

End of August will be a year for me......I think you're doing great for 3 months. Keep it up and keep posting audio files...... look back in a year and you'll see a lot of progress.

Here's my entry into the August 2013 banjo challenge. I've got a long way to go but I'm happy about my progress. Cheers from Alabama, USA.

I decided I would update my progress on CC and record another better, faster rendition. The first version was recorded after one month of playing, the second after two, and the third after seven months.
I had a busy summer so I didn't make a lot of progress in that time, but I'm still having a lot of fun.
Cheers,
Michelle

Good progress Michelle. Your timing on the latest version is solid and with good speed. Keep sharing songs!!!!

Sounded like great progress to me! The one month improvement in the first two was 'night and day'. The third one seems that you are very much more confident. Well Done!

My take on "my grandfather's clock" again playing a banjo that is better that I am.

I was wondering, has there been any thought to making this thread a sticky? It's one I like to come back to pretty often, and if activity gets low it can get pushed way back. Plus, I think it's inspirational, especially to those just beginning.

This is a great thread. Thank you for posting it. Here is my version of groundhog. I am about 1 1/2 years in. This is my first mp3.

Dang, Steve, that is really good! You are obviously working the timing, making it even and steady. That is my biggest problem. I guess without the timing it is only a pile of notes.

Thank you R, when I listen to my version and the original, I hear a lot of room for improvement. I'm glad to hear your comment because I work hard at timing. To me its everything. Thank you for the kind words and please post an mp3, I'd love to hear you play.

Thank you Bob. Its a 1970 fender allegro. i also have a hatfield buck creek but I cant put the fender down. its the sweetest banjo i've ever played. rock solid on staying in tune and pops like an old gibson, great volume. not bad for having a tone loop instead of a ring. as for setup, I really have no idea. I'm terrible at that stuff.

Steve, I think Eric would ban me for some sort of violation if I posted my garbage on his site! LOL! I much prefer encouraging others to play and learning form them. I married a woman from Lawrence County, just a short ride from Spring Hill. Nice place to live.

ITA, you pick some of the toughest tunes to play for a beginner! There is a guy, Andyincov, who will post a tune and repost it as he figures it out, gets feedback, etc. before long he has a jam worthy tune he can play with his band n the pub. You might try that same progression so people can offer suggestions and there is affirmation of your progress. Andy has really improved a lot in a few years. I think that structured approach has been a big part of it.

The melody line is well defined in your latest version ITA, so that is a big improvement over the earlier version.

Thanks C. I'm in the mood for a melody so heres a new one I'm working on.....lots of flaws in it but theres promise I think.

That was very nice ITA. I love that old hymn. The melody line was very easy to hear and the chords sounded in all the right places.
I couldn't help but notice that your cat didn't like it. It snuck out of the room, then snuck even further away and finally disappeared right out the back!
Time to get a new cat perhaps, one that appreciates banjo playing the good old gospel music.
rgoad - Posted - 10/29/2013: 09:20:16
ITA, I agree with the Aussie. The latest version of BTCD was more confident and you used some slides, I think. My instructor has recently sent me to the woodshed with the metronome for a beating. Get it? Metronome? Beating? Anyway, you may help yourself by using a metronome with a strong downbeat and stomp your foot along with it.

Hey guys its been a while since I or anyone has posted anything on here so I thought id give`er a shot. Here is Red Haired boy on my new Flint Hill FHB-297 banjo that just arrived 2 days ago. I`ve tore it down and checked everything over, polished the MOP inlays which were quite roughly done, set the head to A and put new GHS sonny osbourne strings on it. I`m not sure if I have it the way I want it yet, id like to get more growl outta that 4th string. I`ve got 3 Tim Purcell bridges coming for it to test out. By the way that Tim is on top of things he returns e-mails on the spot and helps get things settled! I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a new bridge. His site is easy to go through and very easy to place an order.
anyways let me know what you think, it`s still a little rough but my fingers are getting smoother and faster.......slowly i might add but they are.

Your playing sounds good.
The one thing I would suggest is to start working on playing without looking at your hands. It is quite tough at first and you'll make a lot more mistakes but it will pay off in the end. Instead of playing off visual cues, you will start respond more to musical sounds. This will free you up so that instead of looking to where you should place your hands, you will be feeling how both hands should feel in a given musical context.
Of course, I don't mean to play with your eyes closed all the time (though that would be good) but just start making an effort to play without looking at the fretboard so much.
I really learned this playing piano where I was trying to watch my two hands at the same time (which is not possible). When I learned how to play without looking at the keyboard, I was free to envision the action of my two hands (in my mind, as it were).
Keep on practicing and playing because you're on the good route.
rgoad - Posted - 11/16/2013: 14:14:58
Sounds pretty good, RibT. My teacher tells me the same thing about looking at my hands. So it MUST be true! I know this sounds strange but I can 'see' the notes better when I am 'seeing' them in my head. Even if I don't really know what the next note is I know at least pretty close to where I would touch the strings to make it sound.

well.. been a long time since I did anything on here...spring had me bear hunting and a 4 day canoe trip, summer had me atlantic salmon fishing, early fall had me moose hunting (tagged a 6 point bull) and November had me deer hunting (tagged a 6 point buck).. and just made up some hot italian favour moose sausage last weekend.. mmm mmm good! lol
well will be back at taking lessons in January til end of June.. looking forward to it.. been practicing this past week going over past lessons getting my fingers back into the groove again. Surprisingly it's all coming back fairly easily even though I've been away from it for so long.
I did take the banjo with me on a fishing trip in August..the tune was Knockin on Heaven's door.. Aaron and Denis played the guitars, switching off on the leads and I played the banjo... it actually sounds ok to me, but not great.. but we never practiced it and I'd never played it on banjo before. I'd post it here but, I don't think it's good enough! lol
well again, looking forward to gettin' back at'er! I'll post my progress
