Emu is all dark meat, like duck, and at its best it tastes like rancid fat. But if you live in the country, emus WILL keep the rattlesnakes away from your house!

A friend and I butchered two emus (they were free and it seemed like a good idea at the time). Got the first one out of the stock trailer by tying a leg with a lead rope. As I get it out, I quickly come to the realization that it still has one leg free and is really mad. Thinking I'm going to die, I manage to tie it off to a fence post. My buddy looks at me and says 'we forgot about something, how do you kill an emu?'.

The meat was so bad, we ended up making both of them into jerky. The jerky was so bad we fed it to the dogs.

The only thing I have tried other than real chicken is escargot, and I had to close my eyes and tried to swallow but had to spit out. Frog legs, i just covered up and sent to trash. I kept thinking, these things like lobster, turn back raw when they get cold. But i like and do eat lobster dainties, but I don't do much thinking when I do. Micki

One of my favorite appetizers is escargot stuffed mushroom caps. Just take escargot, stuff them into large crimini mushroom caps, place them in a baking dish, pour a mixture off minced garlic, melted butter and white wine over all of them. Top them with freshly grated Parmesana Reggiano and bake at 350 deg for about 15 minutes, or until cheese melts and begins to form a light brown crust. I garnish them with some chopped scallions if I have any handy.

I once served these to a friend and her fiance who came over for dinner. They were well received and our friend proclaimed, "These are the BEST stuffed mushrooms I have ever eaten! What is the delicious stuffing?" I told her that it was escargot. She puked all over the table. So much for dinner.

My aunt was raising ostriches in Montgomery Alabama. The meat is dark and very lean. No additives or hormones. She was trying to go in business supplying ostrich meat but couldn't get FDA approval so she had to sell to small specialty stores. The FDA and Beef people made sure that ostrich meat didn't become a safe alternative to other red meat.

By the way. One ostrich egg feeds a lot of people for breakfast. It's like a dozen chicken eggs.

I had escargot. Minced up with butter and garlic, it tastes just like garlic minced in butter. Nonetheless, it's made outta snails - not to be consumed by people. I've never understood the mindset; I have to go along with Pete. When they run outta chicken, I'll eat chicken substitutes. Turkey that tastes like bacon? Margarine that tastes like butter? If I want bacon, butter, or chicken, that's what I'll eat.

I like KFC, I like Popeyes, but neither compares to a good prime rib!

Logically though, when someone tells you they were hit in the nuggets, what parts might that be? Urr... maybe logic isn't always your friend.

My dictionary defines a nugget as 1. A small, solid lump, especially of gold. 2. A small compact portion or unit.

So I guess the answer is chicken but in this brave new world, all too often it could mean "Anything that kinda tastes like chicken".

I have a book called "Tales of Old Florida" it says in one story that Manatee's "taste like the finest beef." I thought I was going to get thrown out of our local manatee park when I asked the guide if she "had any good manatee recipes and how hard are they to clean."

And they're tough. Stringy. You know what I mean? Overpriced, posh, trendy, good-for-nothing. Same goes for llama: off-sweet taste.
Now big cats are good. All that nice venison-fed and cow-fed cougar is fit to eat.
Back to "lime-chicken" tonight. Instead of feathered rat, I'm having ruffed grouse.

I am not by any stretch a gastronome but I think tofu only tastes like things the people who think so don't actually eat.

Ostrich? I've had it a couple times. Very beef-like but to my taste not comparable to any any beef cut within the same price ranges.
