My daughter is making some chocolate chip ice cream in the ice cream maker I got her for Christmas, it's called a Play and Freeze ice cream maker and you have to roll it around in a plastic ball...reminds me of one of those hampster balls we used to have for the hampster to roll around the floor in. What's your favorite kind of ice cream and do you buy it or make it yourself?

My favorite ice cream flavor is Mint Chocolate Chip.

We make our own ice-cream often, usually cookies and cream!

As a kid in upstate NY near Buffalo I enjoyed maple walnut ice cream. I don't know if they make it anymore, though.

I love coconut ice cream. Never made any sort of ice cream though....don't eat it often enough and when I do it's only a tiny scoop I can take before I get sick of it.

Rocky Road for me. Haven't made any ice cream in years but home made sound mighty good.

My homemade lemon ice cream, but I love gelato too, and sorbetto. Blood orange, frutti di bosco, albicocca, coffee, chestnut.

Mint chocolate chip or anything else with mint as the base flavor

I have made my own ice cream.... But boy it's been awhile

My have such good frozen custard available at several stands that I'm rarely inclined to make my own, though we have a really good White Mountain ice cream maker. Frozen custard is a St. Louis specialty. Favorites are cookie dough, dutchman's treat (caramel, hot fudge, pecans), terra-mizzou (pistachio and a special chocolate sauce) and Cardinal sin (hot fudge and sour cherries).

We used to make our own.
We'd cut ice from Jim's Pond and get some salt from the bait shed down on the wharf.

Gramp would always cook chocolate on the stove and us kids would crank it out on the piazza.
Now I buy Gifford's(usually chocolate).

As a kid, that was my favorite too. There was another one called Black Walnut. Haven't seen either for years.

I always like Butter Pecan or vanilla, but now I think my favorite would be be vanilla/orange swirl.

We have an ice cream maker but have never used it.

Basic vanilla is good enough for me at home - on cherry pie. If we go to Gananoque for a cone, I'll have burgundy cherry.

There's a really great ice cream place, Slickers, in Bloomfield, Prince Edward County. The Mrs. went inside while I minded the dog. Turns out they give free "puppy cones", so Angus got his own treat! They make their own ice cream, with original flavours, and it's the best we've ever bought.

Just about any kind of ice cream will do. Joyce and I have a bowl almost every night. We buy it when its on sale, or we make it in the ice cream attachment for the KitchenAid. My absolute favorite ice cream is, believe it or not, garlic chocolate swirl. The garlic cloves are simmered in a simple syrup made from cherry liqueur and sugar for about an hour, then refrigerated overnight. Then you slice the clove up and toss them into the vanilla ice cream mixture. Swirl some chocolate syrup into the ice cream when it is almost finished churning so that it stays in swirls and doesn't completely blend into the product.

I learned that at a garlic festival. I was hesitant (slightly; I'll try most anything) at first, but, man! What a great flavor!

Making ice cream was a weekly treat when I was growing up. You know: the hand crank mixer seated in a wooden tub filled with rock salt and ice. One of Mom's favorites was peach ice cream (with fresh peaches) and strawberry ice cream (with fresh strawberrys).

Occasionally, I'll have Butter Pecan or Strawberry, but generally, I consider anything other than Vanilla, merely something other than Vanilla.

Another vote for mint-chocolate chip. If I'm at a local ice cream parlor, I have a hot fudge sundae with the mint-chocolate chip -- yum, yum!

My wife makes some mighty fine homemade ice cream -- usually flavors it with a fruity yogurt which seems to give it a creamier taste and helps keep it softer in the freezer (if we have any leftovers!).

Looks like my daughter will be having her ice cream for breakfast, as it didn't harden last night. Mmmmm waffles and ice cream!

Coffee Can Ice Cream

This is fun for the kids to do at a picnic or outing.

What you need:
3 pound coffee can
1 pound coffee can
Duct tape
Ice
1 cup rock salt
Ingredients for ice cream recipe

What to do:
Place the ingredients inside the one pound can and seal the lid with duct tape.

Place ice and rock salt in the bottom of the three pound can. Place the one pound can in the three pound can and place ice and rock salt packed on the sides. Alternate between rock salt and ice.

Place the lid on the three pound can and have kids roll the can back and forth to each other seated a few feet apart or across a picnic table from each other.

After 15 minutes, open the large can and pour out the water. Open the small can and scrape the sides. Reseal the small can and place it back in the large can. Fill the large can with ice and salt.

Roll back and forth for 10 or 15 more minutes.

Open the cans and enjoy home made coffee can ice cream.

Vanilla Ice Cream:
2 cups half and half
1 beaten egg
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla

Chocolate Ice Cream:
2 cups half and half
1/2 cup sugar
4 TBS cocoa
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/8 tsp salt

Coffee Ice Cream:
2 cups half and half
2 TBS instant coffee granules
1/2 cup sugar
1/8 tsp salt

Mixed Berry Ice Cream:
2 cups half and half
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup frozen mixed berry puree'
(blend frozen mixed berries in blender to make puree')

Add Ins: chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, chopped candy bar, chopped strawberries or other fruit, cookie crumbles, or anything else you can dream up. These can be added when you open the can after the first 15 minutes.

Substitution: For richer ice cream you can use 1 cup heavy cream for 1 cup of the half and half.

Waffles and ice cream were a staple for breakfast when I was growing up. So were sweet rolls, danishes, doughnuts etc.

Mopick -- we did a similar thing when were camping a couple summers ago, but used heavy duty freezer bags. We stood in a circle and took turns rolling the bag around in our hands before passing on to the next person. We didn't make a lot, but it sure did taste good!
