Great collection J-Walk. I'm proud to see the Albemarle Ramblers--and my buddy and teacher, Pete Vigour--among your selections.

Good to see some Canadian content, too.

Good list!

This looks like a shopping list.

It isn't strictly OT, but that Nadine Landry and Sammy Lind (Foghorn folks) CD is amazing, I'd put that one at the the top of my list.

RWJones1970 - Posted - 12/23/2010:  11:47:50

*** For me it is a toss up between Adam Hurt's "Earth Tones" and Kirk Sutphin & Riley Baugus's "Long Time Piedmonts Pals".

Hoss - Posted - 12/23/2010:  12:00:59

Great list! I believe most of the cd baby recordings are now available from iTunes too. If I have any money left after Christmas shopping is over I do believe I'm going to treat myself to one or two (or three or four) of these.

I got into old time music to get away from top 20 lists.

_________________________Ooops

There was supposed to be a second sentence here but I left this site to find the exact album title and never returned that night.

The message should have read

I got into old time music to get away from top 20 lists.
BUT I really like the only new album I'm sure I got this year:
Riley Baugus and Kirk Sutphin on Old Blue Records - and NO I still don't know the title because I tend to get lost on the internet and end up reading fascinating articles about nothing to do with OTM. Sorry.

*** The more I listen to these other albums J-walk has listed the more I am finding some real "gems" by these other folks. Thanks J for turning me on to others that I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

J-Walk - Posted - 12/23/2010:  17:38:25

Glad to hear it, RW. The point of this post was to show that OT music is very much alive and well.

I'm thinking that, on average, a new old time CD is released about every other week. I don't care for them all, but as you say, there are some real gems.

Another 2010 release that I like a lot:

Nettle Honey - Wild Greens and the Old Path (originals with a few old time tunes)

I did not buy any new Cds this year. I must confess that the preponderance of so much free music on the web converging with us watching our money really closely, helped to create the perfect storm of abstaining from purchasing any recordings this year.

From the phenomena of the "cult of amateurs" on Youtube to internet based radio programming like Sugar In The Gourd and The Last FM, our household is doing it's part to kill the music industry. And it doesn't feel good or just, but like our local meth addicts, it's hard under the current conditions we live in to change our ways.

We also started to record our own music, even if just for posterity, so we concentrate on our own versions of tunes and songs now. Not others. We might research a tune in our existing collection of recordings or use the cursed internet to hear alternative ideas. Then we assemble our version and record it. Heck, I've used the excellent posted recordings of Hangout members to get musical ideas...more damage to the industry from "the cult of amateurs".

So, no list from me this year, and maybe never again. The world is truly turned upside down. But I did pay to see Brad Leftwich at a concert, and he thus prompted me to go to Youtube and find a free version of a tune he played, "Flatwoods".

My apologies to the recording artists, music companies, and plastic manufacturers.

Wishing everyone the best in 2011. Especially you recording artists.

Don

Not new recordings BUT a new CD release for 2010:

Ola Bella Reed Rising Sun Melodies on Folkways

Great tunes AND great liner notes as well.

Has anyone else heard this? I don't think I've seen it mentioned on BHO since it's release.

I absolutely love the sound samples from this album. I am anxiously awaiting its arrival right now. I have another of hers coming from Field Recorders Collective.

As for the new stuff, I really like the Albermarle Ramblers album. I haven't heard the Annie & Mac album, but I will have to look into that as I have always enjoyed their stuff.

Great list. I found these on Spotify:

Albemarle Ramblers
Carolina Chocolate Drops
Curt Bouterse (not 2010 album)
Dirk Powell
Jason & Pharis Romero and Friends
Mary Z. Cox (not 2010 album)
The Dust Busters (not 2010 album)
The Knuckle Knockers

And Ola Belle Reed

Enough to keep me busy for a while.

Nobody has mentioned Old Sledge yet... These are some awesome tunes!

Anna Roberts-Gevalt // vocals, banjo, fiddle
Chance McCoy // vocals, fiddle, banjo and guitar
Sabra Guzman // vocals, guitar

OK, so technically it's an EP so maybe it doesn't "qualify" to make the list. It may be slim but better tunes you will not find.

Nobody fiddles like Chance McCoy!

Thanks for mentioning Old Sledge! Great album. I just bought it.

According to Amazon that Frank Fairfield came out in 2009.

whitetop_banjo - Posted - 12/30/2010:  18:19:23

Here are a few that I'm thinking are from 2010, but could be 2009. Either way, tremendous old-time music.

Mac Traynham and Shay Garriock-Turkey in the Mountain countysales.com/products.php?p...untain%27

Chris Via and the Reed Family Band-Giles County Favorites countysales.com/products.php?p...orites%27

Brian Fain-Ballads and Banjo Tunes countysales.com/products.php?p...%2C-VA%27

My group, the Crooked Road Ramblers also came out with a CD last year. It's available on CDbaby cdbaby.com/cd/tcrramblers for $9.99 as a download or you can order a real disc from me, just shoot me a message.

I'm curious as to what everyone else thought of Genuine Negro Jig. I got it for XMas, listened to it a couple of times and really didn't think much of it. I just pulled it out again after reading this thread. I still didn't care for it that much. It's "old-time", but not "old-time" the way I think it's normally used around here. I also love Earth Tones and highly recommend it to everyone. I think someone around here called it "banjo music for people who don't like banjo music".

bluemule_77 - Posted - 12/30/2010:  20:27:43

I do like Genuine Negro Jig, but the CCDs are best enjoyed live. "Hit 'Em Up Style" is a masterful arrangement of tenor banjo, fiddle, and voice (to include the "beatbox" effect) but a really silly song. Neat to see/hear once or twice but I skip it routinely now. There are about three other tracks on the CD that I don't enjoy much, but I still consider it a success, and worth owning.

I've begun, but have had little time to read, "Way Up North in Dixie," the tale of the Snowden family who may be the source of both "Dixie" and "Genuine Negro Jig." Perhaps I'll report back on that when I get 'er read.

Surpised nobody mentioned Hunter Robertson's Cd with his pal Casey. Every cut I've heard is so well played, and the singing is quite compelling.

Ack! How did I overlook that? I'd posted about that CD after I bought a few weeks back.

Certainly, "If You Want to Go to Sleep, Go to Bed" is my pick o' the year (though I've not heard many of those others....)

How could I forget Crooked Road Ramblers? I bought that when it first came out.

As far as I can tell, all of the others mentioned (except Brien Fain) were released in 2009.

Crooked Road Ramblers was a great one. The best of the year in my book. Kim Johnsons Cd is also my favorite.

Picked up Jim Pankey & Bobby Burns - Grasshopper Sittin' on a Sweet Potato Vine after reading this thread and being reminded how much I like Jim's version of New Railroad (not on this CD). Really good fiddle/banjo duets.

I got that book for Christmas last year. I think it's a fascinating read. I've been wanting to make the short road trip to Mount Vernon, Ohio, ever since.

Hey J-Walk,

Just wanted to thank you again for compiling the list. I had quite a few of the 2010 recordings already, but ordered a few more I hadn't been aware of based on this thread. Have really been enjoying the new ones that I picked up: Jim Pankey & Bobby Burns, Meghan Dudle (who's CD got a good review in the latest Old Time Herald), Scott Prouty, The Pearly Snaps, and Old Sledge.

If you're starting a list for 2011, Foghorn Trio just came out with Sud de la Louisiane.

Regarding Frank Fairfield, when I saw him here in November he said he is working on a new release, but that it's slow going. He's just recording a song at a time as he finds time around all his other engagements.

As for 2011 albums--Sheesham and Lotus just released a great cd of old-time fiddle/banjo duets--"Five Miles from Town." They just played an awesome show in Montpelier, VT that I attended. If you get the chance to hear them live--DO IT! Here's the website:

They are sending out cd's if you send a mo.

Sheesham and Lotus are in Canada, so if you send a money order, make sure it's an international mo. Canadian banks, i understand, don't accept regular mo's.

i'm another vote for Sausage Grinder's cd....

i liked "genuine negro jig" ok, though it had a whiff of the academy or the conservatory to my ear....kind of a folk/roots-day-at-juillard or something feel to me.......

not sure whether it's from this year, but recently stumbled on the cd "south memphis stringband," a nifty trio featuring one of my acoustic blues faves, alvin youngblood hart, and really liked that...there's a bunch of youtubes of them...
