I first heard of The Pearly Snaps from this thread that J-Walk started last year. This week Pearly Snaps fiddler Rosie Newton was in Portland touring with Ferintosh and I had the distinct pleasure of hosting her for an old time house concert while she was here. For this show she was joined by two of the Macrae Sisters, Gabrielle and Joanna, and Rosie's mom Abby Newton. It was a really great show and I was way impressed with Rosie's fiddling. Just wanted to pass along to folk a recommendation to go see her live if you get the chance.
You can see a bit of The Pearly Snaps in action in this YouTube video: Pearly Snaps live @ Johnson Museum
Also, Rosie lives in Ithaca and sometimes plays with Richie Stearns there. There are some good YouTube videos of them playing together like Ribbons & Bows.
All for now, Scott

Thanks for the Richie Strearns video. That led to lots of others!
Rosie is worth keeping an eye on.

I define "old time album" very loosely. Basically, anything that I might want to listen to that has a banjo and/or a fiddle in it. ![]()
When compiling a list of albums, it better to define the genre loosely that rigidly.

I liked the new Gillian Welch / Dave Rawlings album. It's acoustic, guitar and banjo, but no traditional songs, no renditions of Reuben's Train or Cherokee Shuffle, etc. Just beautifully rendered, simple, creative tunes.
