Geez, it's too bad that Sportsnet has deep-sixed "Coach's Corner."  Had they not been so hasty, they could have just slid this guy in and carried on: https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/flames-gm-players-talk-allegations-bill-peters/   devil

Funny, er, ironic, that the guy most quoted is Lucic.

MD loves goons.

Lucic ain't no goon!

I checked with   to calculate some comparisons .... penalty minutes/game and goal scoring:  Lucic  1.2 PM/game and a goal every 4.6 games  ...  Tie Domi 3.5 PM and a goal every 9.8 games ... Stu Grimson  2.9 and a goal every 43 games ... John Kordic  4.1 and 14.4 .... Tony Twist 2.5 and 44.5 .... Fergie 2.4 and 3.4.

What the????...a goal every 44 games!!!    Kodic's PM/game are the highest, but he scored at 3X the rate of Grimson and Twist... go figure!?!?!

P.S. Like one used to see on some business letters: "E&OE."

Can we still say “goon”? In today’s emerging hockey culture I believe it’s become a disparaging word..... (and the skies are not cloudy all day)

Don't look at me.... Paul started it!!   cheeky

I was thinking a bit more about a goal every 44 games.... Heck, if my memory serves me correctly I even eclipsed that ...and that's just countin' goals during real games... not my practice ones!

Edit: I like the way Treleving (?) said he wanted to "provide an update" and then went on to babble for several minutes.

HipHop’s not big in Alberta. (although we have a Muslim mayor in Calgary who’s single and rumoured to be gay) , it being basically a redneck, cow-punching, oil roughnecking province. Peters being from Three Hills, a small burg in the Alberta hinterlands, he never adjusted to “big city“ life in Rockford, Illinois.

Three Hills??? I didn't know that.   My wife and I taught a year in Castor/Coronation.... so he and I are practically brothers!   ...AND I've been to the Torrington Gopher Museum!!

My noggin doesn't retain stuff as well as it used to.... aren't Nenshi's "approval ratings" significantly higher than those of mayors in other Canadian cities.   And that's as far as I'll delve into that stuff we're not supposed to mention.

He’s won 3 elections now, I think. Calgarians are a different breed from the rural-ites,, like in most places. Ralphie Klein used to grumble that there were too many “easterners” here...lol

I don't "follow" this stuff... just get snippets here and there on network radio/TV, so I'm probably short on info.  However, it seems to me that an important factor would be Peter's current/recent behaviour.... IF he has demonstrated that he's actually smartened up over the past decade, then I'd be inclined to  give him a break.    But.... I'm not holding my breath waiting for the Flames or the NHL to ask me.

He kicked a black player in the back in Carolina,,confirmed by none other than Rod Brind’amour. Has a history of this stuff,,never apologized (yet). He has left the team,,assistant coach is behind the bench tonight.
A commentator on the FAN 960 this afternoon wasn’t siding with Peters , so he gets death threats tweeted his way. Crazy.

My mistake - he kicked a Czech player in the back, and punched another (unnnamed as yet) player in the head during a game.

Oh, no! Not in the head!! cheeky     Chuck's comment reminded me of what I think is a human interest story, so I'll pass it on just for Bubba's sake, even though it's in no way related to Moron Don, Bill Peters, sports or even this thread.

On one of the reserves I was subbing in a grade 4 class one p.m.  A few minutes before day's end we were cleaning up and one of the boys was on his hands and knees picking up pencil crayons.  I'm paying attention to my own chores when above the normal hustle-and-bustle I hear the TA call out: "Trevor is humping Jonathon from behind!"  So with a bit of feigned alarm I responded: "Oh, No! Not from behind...".   [...and as Trevor had already stopped, clean up continued as if nothing had happened.]

Hahahahaha.....lot of sensitive Canadiens. Do you really think that you, or your country, are judged by a hockey analyst that showed up for 7 minutes a week between periods?

I grew up near the Canadien border watching DC on HNIC on a CBC channel that interloped across the border. Strong opinions polarize, and people have such paper thin skins nowadays, it's not surprising he got fired. It's very difficult for any non-conformist working in a media field, in today's social media environment. The internet mob is ever vigilant.

Paper thin skins ,,until you get slurred yourself,,then it’s a different story. And no, we don’t think we get judged as a country by a loud dimwit on TV,,, why even think that, Tim?

Tim, the guy should have been fired decades ago. I don't really know how he stayed on so long. I guess being a loudmouth with unfounded opinions appeals to a large section of the hockey watching demographic. He's not a non-conformist, just an ignorant jerk. Colourful, but ignorant.

I doubt that the hockey watching demographic is appreciably different from a lot of other demographics, especially anything that involves competition.

Personally, I saw Cherry as an entertainer,  with a small sphere of influence.... unlike some wink with similar views  who get lots of press.  Essentially he was a non-entity in shaping my thinking/outlook, but I can see how some would be attracted.... more for expressing their outlook than in forming it, IMNSHumbleO.

I wonder whether we're better off having opinions like his out in the open or hidden from public scrutiny.

As for our discussing (?) it, I don't see it as a measure of skin thickness/thinness... just something to shoot the breeze about [and maybe in some small way influence those we interact with] until the next SNAFU overtakes it.

I just didn’t like the fact that he was a rotten influence (in many respects) on kids. Saying stuff like “never apologize” , that fighting in hockey is to be glorified, and his xenophobia.

"Xenophobia.... where's Don Cherry when we need him?"

Given DC's propensity to pooh-pooh RM's use of multisyllabic words, that's become somewhat of an inside joke (?) between my wife and I.

....dunno. Hyphenate it?  "track-tor"

Edit: One of my brothers used to work for an ag. chemical company.  He tells the tale (unverified) of a farmer that phoned for something or other.

My brother asked the dude for his name.

Dude answers: "Gus Yaholnitsky."

Brother: "Would you spell that please?"

Dude: "Gus ... G - U - S."

Oh, I think it would be appreciably different from the audience for, say, synchronized swimming. cheeky

So, you're telling me that people actually watch synchronized swimming?!?!   A guy learns sumpthin' everyday here on the Hangout!    [I acknowledge the athleticism, and that tastes vary, but personally I can't get past the ugly hair and the phoney smiling.]

But, you're right about differing audiences, and I cast too wide a net with "competition."  Had I thought it thru a bit more [like DC didn't] I "should have said" that people who watch hockey are normal, regular people.... just as normal/regular as those that watch baseball, rodeo, basketball, the CP Holiday Train, 4-H achievement days, rasslin', curling, BG music festivals, etc. [Well, those last 3 might be stretching it a little, but you get my drift.]

Now, to subject you to some Red Green rationale:  If people that watch synchronized swimming are different from the normal folk noted above, they must be abnormal / irregular*.    And I'm guessing** that some other activities might fit into the outlier category as well: figure skating, ball-room dancing, dog/cock fighting, crokinole tournaments, etc.  Speaking of activities like figure skating [Tanya Harding] and beauty pageants*** [with their tales of some pretty nasty interference from moms] .... maybe they're not so genteel/refined as they initially appear.

[As an aside, how far is it from abnormal to looney fringe?]

* = word specifically chosen to segue into commentary about Dulcolax (TM), high fibre diets, etc.

** = There probably are psych studies that show correlations or lack thereof between acitivities and personality types, but I'm too lazy to "look it up," and besides I might uncover something that makes me re-evaluate my thinking.   frown

*** = beauty pageants  ... do they still have those?
