Wow! I didn't think he'd get fired! There's gonna be one heck of a big suit sale!

His suits go to the rodeo clowns in Calgary

I was watching his rant the other night- as soon as he said "you people" I knew he was in trouble.  Folks from distant lands don't adapt instantly to traditions in their new country.  It takes a generation or two.  His patriotic stance was just a guise for his bigotry,,, I say that after many years of hearing his loud-mouthed opinions.  First time I saw him go off on a rant I felt embarrassed to be Canadian.  He made a lot of dough being loud and controversial,,,the chickens have come home to roost.

Strictly hearsay, but I seem to recall that several years back, when he hadn't signed for the upcoming season, that his expired salary was $450,000 / season [and since the NHL operates in US$......].   I don't see a "tag day" in his foreseeable future.

I wonder if they'll scrap the CC concept.... or maybe Howie Meeker and George Stromboulopoulos can do a televised best-of-seven rock/paper/scissors to see who will replace him.

As an aside Chuck, being a man of my word, I did check* with a couple of Russell's minor hockey coaches.  They both said that in the early years players didn't even know who D.C. was, but as they set themselves apart from their team mates and/or competition that probably changed.... in proportion to their chances of "making it,"...starting at the bantam level.   They both thought that draft eligible juniors would be well-aware of his take on things, but that "those days [i.e. goon hockey] were long gone" .... i.e. by a couple of decades+.

* = without asking particularly leading questions.  wink

Hah...I remember he and Ron were interviewing Ti Domi. Cherry said something about Ti being a pretty good hockey player for a goon. Ti verbally laid into him hard on that one! Then in the wake of the 3 enforcers -Rypien, Belak, and Boogaard- committing suicide due to painkiller addictions, he slammed them for being lowly drug addicts. Cherry made a lot of money selling those Rock’em Sock’em DVD’s, cashing in on his favourite “goons”. And remember- he had John Wensink.....lol

Now that Don Cherry has been canned and has been cut from Coaches Corner, Fabricland has filed for bankruptcy. There's nobody to buy all the really goofy fabrics any more.

Stupid bird that soils its own nest. Really stupid bird.

Well, ya beat me to the posting, Chuck.

It's about time.

I never liked the guy. I thought he was an ignoramus. I was given a pink button saying "Pinko Cyclist" after his rant when Rob Ford was sworn in as Toronto mayor (wow - consider the company he keeps). Some of us even thought of wearing pink and cycling past his place on Wolfe Island. I'm still up for it.

The kid across the street in T.O. was drafted into the team he owned at the time. They were told, just when the OHA was trying to crack down on fighting, that, if you wanted to make the team, you had to fight.

I wondered why they'd kept him on so long (for some years it may have been to make sure someone wouldn't appoint him to the Senate - oh, geez). His rants about European hockey players were way off. In the beginning he said some funny things - such as his wife liking Mississauga even though it's "a place i can't spell". But he always came across, to me, as a loudmouth and a bully. I always wondered how Ron McLean could put up with him.

I liked Kelly Hrudy's analyses better.

He had a tailor make his jackets out of drapery fabric he bought at Fabricland. Rick Mercer did a segment on it. Let's check out Value Village in the near future.

I just wish they'd take his mug off the side of Svendsen Brothers' auto service out on Front |Road here. Maybe replace it with a weasel.

So long, Moron Don. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out. We wouldn't want any damage ... to the door.

Edited to add: I was typing when you posted your Fabricland comment, Brian. Good one.

Paul Didn't he have a bar in Kingston called Grapes?  I saw an old interview with Cherry & Rick Mercer.

Rick was saying that Cherry would go out in a ball of flames & Don said ...Or a train wreck! Ha! Ha!

I saw a comment that said. He hasn't changed. The world did.

Chuck, it's his portrait, way larger than life (although way smaller than his ego), so I'm sure he's okay with it. I wonder if he wanted royalties.

Bob, there's a Don Cherry's Sports Bar here in K-Town - isn't there one in Toronto, too? The one here is on Princess Street - thankfully not right downtown. It's the section between Division and Bath Road - the one with the worst pavement. Fitting.

I have heard the first game of hockey was played in Kingston on the ice in front of Fort Frontenac.

Some argue it was first played down east. Is there still the hockey hall of fame on the grounds of the Memorial Center?

I looked up Svendsons & saw the picture. Can't figure out how to put it here.

I'm no psychologist, but McLean strikes me as a bit of a sycophant.  [Now, there's a word M.D. could have a bit of fun with!!]

Funny you should mention Hrudy.  About an hour ago my daughter in Edmonton phoned and the subject of the firing came up. I quipped something to the effect that I sure hope they don't fill the spot with Kelly Hrudy... because then there would be two spots where nobody was watching. [FWIW, she agreed.]

...and lets not forget Cherry was not there as an analyst, but as an entertainer, with a significant part of it via intentional controversy.

Without doing much "analysing" of my own, I think much of the dislike for Cherry came not from what he said, but how he said it.  Like you say he was a loudmouth, etc., etc., etc.

His getting the sack doesn't bother me one way or the other. IF they replace him with something less "interesting," then I suppose I'll just replace that 7-8 minutes (?) with something else.... possibly not NHL related [who knows, it could prove beneficial...I might even do a little more TITM].  Maybe it's an indication that I'm getting old???

Bob, they tore down the International Hockey Hall of Fame when they renovated the grounds of the Memorial Centre (I'm there fairly frequently - the City has given an office space to Cycle KIngston http://www.cyclekingston.ca/). They're now calling it "The Original Hockey Hall of Fame" and it's in the Invista Centre in the (where else?) west end, on Gardiner's Road just south of the 401. http://www.originalhockeyhalloffame.com Check out the tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pGz14nUWxU&feature=youtu.be I doubt they'll do anything with their M.D. connection.

Owen, I guess we'll agree to disagree. Hrudy comments on the game - I like coaching comments, especially since I sucked at hockey. Technical talk makes the game make more sense to me. M.D.'s talk of "grinders" (and its bigoted connotations), visors, and such just gets in the way. Actually, since I don't watch (just highlights), it wouldn't make much difference.

If you said, "Ron MacLean is your sycophant," to M.D., he'd probably yell, "No 'e's not! How can 'e be? He doesn't have a trunk!"

Re. cuckaloos and left-wing weirdos.... maybe we have a parallel to my layman's* understanding of liability law... that truth is an absolute defense so long as it is not motivated by malice???   cheeky

* = in addition to not being a psychologist, I'm also not a lawyer!!

Edit:  re. climate change, let's just say I think our activities exacerbate it.  I don't put a lot of stock in whether Don Cherry called me a cuckaloo or not... kinda shrug it off with "Well, what else would you expect?"

Don may be arrogant, offensive and politically incorrect, but he just said what was his opinion, didnt target any "visible minority" and said what should be said. Come to Canada and show respect to the soldiers that made it a safe haven....wear a poppy.

Oh, but its OK for our PM to do the blackface, turban equipped brown face, then have a little cry on the national election stage and get re-elected??????

Sometimes Canada is just SOOOOOOOOOO full of BS!!!!!
