To our Aussie friends, especially HO member Paul Smythe, who bought a rim of mine and turned it into a beautiful fretless!

John,

I love this  little tune, and like the clean, clear version that you have recorded.

Merry Christmas, John.

Thanks for the tune. Good job!
It's the perfect rollicking banjo tune.
You have inspired me to pull my finger out and learn some Aussie tunes on clawhammer banjo.

G'day John from Sydney Australia. I am flattered that you would record one of our favourite folk songs !.

This song is a "protest" song against a harsh establishment when Australia was formed in the late 1700's by the English. Its about a bloke (man) who is down on his luck, who would rather throw himself in the river than get caught by the troopers (police). Its a sort of "up yours" song (on a nice way). Here is some translations for you;

"Jumbuck" - sheep
"Swagman" - hobo
"Waltzing Matilda" - the knapsack on his back that "dances as he walks"
"Troopers" - Police
"Billabong" - creek
"Coolibah Tree" - gum tree (native to Australia)
"Billy" - Kettle to boil water over a fire
"Tuckerbag" - knapsack with food inside

Peter - Sydney

Peter...Thanks for the comment. I was unfamiliar with the definitions even though I've heard them for years.
